School chaplain Marilyn Shedden led the children on a re-enactment of Palm Sunday through to resurrection morning at several locations on the beach.
Grown ups waited at the shore and watched the children coming down the steps from the church, waving palm branches in a happy procession.
Ms Shedden explained how Jesus was a servant to His disciples when He washed their feet. Leaving the basin and cloth on the sand, everyone moved along the shore and shared juice and biscuits, symbolising the last supper.
Further along the beach, children acted out soldiers arresting Jesus, shouting: “Crucify Him, Crucify Him.”
The crucifixion was then explained and a real crown of thorns was held aloft and hung on a cross alongside a purple ribbon as signs of a king.
“Sadness turned to happiness when we reached a cleft in the rock where the ‘tomb’ was found empty,” said head teacher Catriona Brown. “Jesus had risen! Finally, we stood around a fire pit and looked out to sea. As we imagined a wee fishing boat, we heard how Jesus had then appeared to the disciples and ate fish with them.”
Everyone left the beach and headed to the church where Reverend Lyn Peden shared a short message and prayer of thanksgiving. This was the first time since the beginning of the Covid pandemic that the school has been inside the church and it was a memorable day.
After the service, the children received their end-of-term awards and ate hot cross buns.
