A Tarbert pub quiz night raised almost £3,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of a much-missed. villager.
Twenty teams were put through their paces at the Corner House fundraiser last Friday, with a range of subjects, from general knowledge to picture and music rounds, testing their grey matter.
The evening was held in memory of Lynne Watt.
In a dramatic finish, the quiz ended in a three-way tie, with a sudden death decider required before The Stone Riggers could be crowned champions.
Members of the winning team were given bottles of wine courtesy of the Corner House after very generously donating their £100 prize money back to the Macmillan fund.
The Corner House regularly holds charity fundraisers but this event was particularly poignant for Margaret MacNeill, who runs the pub with husband Duggie, as she worked with Lynne at Tarbert Pharmacy.
Lynne died in December, aged just 46, only a few months after a cancer diagnosis.
Between entry fees, a prize raffle – which was drawn on the night by Lynne’s husband Graeme and pharmacy colleague Gail MacDonald – and other donations, the event raised a total of £2,850 in her memory.
Margaret said: “I think it’s a really fitting tribute to Lynne, raising such a fantastic total.
“Thanks go to Martin Jefferies, who does our quizzes, and his partner Allie who helps him, as we couldn’t do it without them, and my sister Zena Hawthorn who always sells raffles tickets for us. A huge thanks to all who donated money and raffle prizes. Tarbert is amazing at coming together for causes like this.”
Kathleen Young, administration services manager at Mid Argyll Community Hospital and a member of the local Macmillan Cancer Support fundraising group, added: “We are indebted to Duggie and Margaret for hosting this charity quiz night at the Corner House in Tarbert, and we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Tarbert community for the fantastic sum raised.
“All funds raised are ring-fenced for the Argyll and Bute Council catchment area. Funds help to provide services and support patients and families living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis.
“The committee fundraises throughout the year to support this and welcomes all donations and fundraising events held. Our thanks go out to all.”
The Corner House is now preparing to host its annual race night in aid of Parkinson’s UK on March 2.
