Interested in giving back to the community, but unavailable during the working day? Re_Store Oban is looking for new evening and early morning volunteers to help with its food waste initiative.
The Rescued Food Shop was launched in June 2024 from the Re_Store shop on George Street. To date the initiative has saved over 6.5 tonnes of short date food going to landfill and has provided 1,200 bags of food to the community.
Re_Store is led by the local charity Hope Kitchen which, through its partnerships with Neighbourly and FareShare, has worked with a number of local supermarkets and wholesalers including Booker, Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Aldi and Lidl to collect food that has reached its best before date but is still perfectly good to eat.
The food rescue initiative is now looking for more helpers and the evening or early morning roles would be perfect for people who find their day jobs limit their opportunity to volunteer and help others.
Sarah Banks, Rescued Food Coordinator, said: "It’s been exciting see the local community getting behind the Rescued Food project and see their positivity and commitment to preventing food from going in the bin. It would be great to have more people involved with thoughts for the future increasing food collections and extending the time people can access the food."
She added: "Also moving forward we’d like to produce a few recipe cards of what meals people have made from rescued food. We’re at the tip of the iceberg and the possibilities are endless with more people power."
The unsung heroes of the project are the volunteers who go out to do the food collections and having been involved from the very beginning, Kieran Campbell can see the benefit of his contribution clearly.
He said: "I’m acutely aware of how wasteful an age I live in, so I’m glad to be part of a great team that help combat that. Being able to turn a few heads by cycling trailer loads of unsold food through town each week hopefully gets a few more people thinking about food waste and sustainable travel.
"Every item of food that’s diverted from landfill to the plate of someone who needs and appreciates it is a win for our community and the environment."
If you live close to Oban, have access to a car (or even a bike with a large trailer like Kieran) and are happy to go out to collect food at night or early in the morning then this volunteering opportunity could be for you.
