Arran Riding Club recently held its annual jumping derby at Balgowan Farm in Shiskine and saw a number of young riders compete.
The competition started with three clear round jumping classes at different heights: 35cms, 65cms and 85cms. For the 65cms and 85cms classes, riders began with a clear round, followed by a speed round.
Riders then paired up to complete the jumping course as a tag team in the quickest possible time before completing the ‘pick a fence’ class, a timed challenge. In the class, competitors attempted to gain the most points by jumping fences of their choice, with each fence being allocated a set number of points.
Finally, the riders battled it out in the ‘Chase me Charlie’ class, where riders took turns to jump the same jump with ever-increasing heights. If a horse knocked the pole, the rider was eliminated.
The judges then totalled the points from all five classes to identify the champions from the 65cms group and the 85cms group.
The day ended with a prizegiving ceremony during which the young riders celebrated their success.
