Building Scotland’s Future Workforce with DYW….
Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) is Scotland’s national network connecting schools with businesses to prepare young people for the future. In the Highlands, DYW has eight dedicated School Coordinators working across secondary schools in Lochaber, Skye, and Wester Ross, while Argyll & Bute has a team of four coordinators supporting schools across Argyll & the Isles.
Funded by the Scottish Government, DYW is transforming the way employers engage with young people, highlighting career pathways and supporting informed choices. By linking students with local employers, DYW opens doors to practical opportunities that align with students’ interests and the needs of the business community, creating a win-win for youth, employers, and the economy.
Students can access DYW services by speaking to their school’s guidance team. Coordinators work with schools and employers to create tailored experiences, potentially offering students a balance between school and hands-on work experience.
DYW West Highland - Looking Forward to a Bright November!
November is shaping up to be an exciting and impactful month for Developing the Young Workforce (DYW)
West Highland, with a host of events aimed at connecting young people to career opportunities and bridging the gap between education and the workplace.

Throughout November, DYW is also running employability skills sessions for senior pupils, offering practical training in resume writing, interview techniques, and communication skills to prepare them for the workplace.

DYW Argyll & Bute connects people with people, from education to employment - get involved!
DYW Argyll and Bute, led by Scott McKinnon, works to connect young people with career opportunities in the region. Based at Dunoon Grammar School, Scott is supported by Pamela McNaughton, administration and finance assistant. The team’s coordinators include Suzi Thomson (Campbeltown, Tarbert, Islay), Peta-Jane Miller (Oban, Tobermory, Tiree), Beth McLardie (Lochgilphead, Helensburgh), and Sophie McCormick (Rothesay, Dunoon).
The team focuses on bridging the gap between students and employers. “We want young people to be aware of the opportunities here in Argyll and Bute,” says Suzi. “Our work with employers helps them attract young talent, supporting both their business and the local economy by encouraging young people to stay and contribute to the community.”
DYW organises events like careers fairs, employer engagement lunches, business workshops, business breakfasts and work experience placements to foster relationships between schools, students, and employers.
Scott explains, “We aim to give young people real insight into the workplace before they enter it. We host our DYW Conference each year (2025 date coming soon) and really encourage employers, parents and young people to come along to talk to us about the opportunities to grow and develop on all sides”.
