Sailing enthusiasts are being offered the opportunity to embark on a 13-day Viking voyage from Denmark to Oban this August.
The Viking Challenge is a unique adult-only sailing expedition and is being run by Ocean Youth Trust (OYT) Scotland, a Greenock-based youth work and sail training charity.
The opportunity is open to experienced sailors as well as those new to the high seas, with the crew sailing the charity’s 72-ft vessel, Alba Explorer, across the North Sea and around the north of Scotland, taking in some of Scotland’s oldest Norse settlements.
The 13-day challenge begins at the Tall Ships Races festival in Esbjerg, Denmark, the final port of the Tall Ships Races 2025. Setting sail on Saturday August 9, up to 12 participants will be supported by a small team of experienced sea staff from the charity to embrace their new life on the waves.
All participants will have the opportunity to take part in an Induction Weekend two months before the voyage, where they will be introduced to their vessel, to sailing and to their crew mates. This preparation will ensure that everyone, regardless of prior sailing experience, is ready to tackle the open waters with confidence.
Participants will pay £2,000 for their berth on the voyage and the charity is encouraging those who can to donate £1,500 on top of that, which will go towards supporting OYT Scotland’s work in delivering life-changing youth work voyages to young people aged 12-25.
OYT Scotland’s Chief Executive Officer, Hazel Wiseman, said: “This is a great opportunity for new and experienced sailors alike to meet new people, challenge themselves and raise vital funds for our youth work projects.”
The charity supports more than 600 young people each year from a range of backgrounds and circumstances. Through sail training, it equips young people with vital skills for life, learning and work.
