Newtonmore 4
Skye Camanachd 4
Newtonmore and Skye Camanachd played out an entertaining 4-4 draw in their 1.30pm throw up at The Eilan.
Skye led 3-1 at one point, although the sides went into the interval tied at 3-3.
Joe Coyle scored twice for ‘More before Drew MacDonald and Iain Robinson got the others. Jamie Gillies, Ross Gordon’s penalty and Ruaraidh MacLeod’s brace made up Skye’s tally.
‘More manager Peter Ross said: “It was very competitive, but a good clean game against a Skye side that is continuing to improve. They look fit, sharp and physical.
“Skye pair Ross Gordon and Ryan Harrison impressed me, and our wing centres Euan Dingwall and Arron MacBean also did well. Both sides had good spells in the game, and I think both teams took something from it.”
Skye manager Willie MacDonald said: “William MacKinnon was very good in the middle of the field for us whilst our forwards Ross Gordon, Ruaraidh MacLeod and Archie Millar looked dangerous all day. We were a bit sloppy at times in the first half though. I would say Iain Robinson was good for Newtonmore, scoring against us again, whilst Euan Dingwall did well, too, sending deep balls into our goal area and they scored from two of them.
“A draw was probably a fair result.”
Oban Celtic 3
Col Glen 2
Oban Celtic recorded another good pre-season win, beating National Division side Col Glen 3-2 at Mossfield.
The Mossfield ground staff put in a huge effort to clear surface water from the pitch to allow this 2.30pm throw up to get underway.
Col Glen struck first through Neilly MacNaughton, but the home side grew into the game and Jamie MacFarlane drew Celtic level.
Col Glen regained the lead through Sam Bulloch and stayed in front until half-time.
Alex Dunnings then made it 2-2 and within minutes, Celtic’s Gabriel Tidser got what proved to be the winner with a 30-yard rocket into the top corner of the net to decide what was a good pre-season game.
Col Glen had the better of first half and created more chances due to a strong wind in their favour, but the Celtic defence and stand-in keeper did well. The second half was fairly even with chances at both be ends.
This proved to be a good run out for both teams with some good shinty on show for the spectators.
Both teams had players missing but this allowed for valuable game time for several younger players, with Celtic’s Ryan MacInnes having another strong showing in defence while Col Glen’s Hunter Black also turned in a good performance.
The only downside for Celtic was an injury to Murray McClymont who suffered a head split through his helmet.
Everyone at Celtic wishes him a speedy recovery and the Oban club also took time to thank Col Glen for travelling whilst wishing them all the best for 2025, and Murray MacGregor for his expert refereeing.
Newtonmore 0
Skye Camanachd 2
The Skye Camanachd second team beat the Newtonmore second team 2-0 in their 2pm throw up at the Dr Johnnie Cattanach pitch. John Archie Tuncay and Iain MacLellan scored the goals.
Uddingston 1
Kyles Athletic 6
The Kyles Athletic second team beat Uddingston 6-1 in their noon throw up at the Clydebank Community Sports Hub 4G all-weather pitch.
Will Cowie and Ethan Kerr both scored twice for the visitors with Dunkie Kerr and Logan Sim also netting.
Lovat 3
Lewis Camanachd 3
Lewis Camanachd came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with the Lovat second team in their 12.30pm throw up at Balgate.
Brodie Campbell-West put Lovat ahead and Euan Ferguson got their second and third. However, Scott MacLeod, Paul Duke and Kieran MacDonald scored for the Islanders to level the contest.
The new shinty season starts on Saturday March 1.
Oban Camanachd start their season against Kinlochshiel at Mossfield.
Manager Daniel Cameron is looking forward to his first competitive game in charge and he said: “You know what you get with Kinlochshiel. They’re a well organised side, and I believe they have the same guys as last season so they’ll have a strong team. They will be tough opponents, but we are confident against anyone at Mossfield.
“It’s going to be a strong league. There are teams like Caberfeidh and Skye who I’m sure will kick-on from last season and newly promoted clubs Fort William and Beauly just add to the league’s strength.
Assistant manager Iain MacMillan added: “Daniel Madej missed the friendly against Kingussie a fortnight ago as he had a slight hamstring problem, and we didn’t want to risk him. Malcolm Clark was also unavailable that day, too, as he was on a family break, but both should be back for this one.
“We weren’t keen to take on too many preseason friendlies as over the last three years, we’ve suffered significant injuries in these games to the likes of Daniel Cameron, Daniel Sloss and Evan MacLellan, injuries which have stung us and left us short for the season start so it’s not been worth it.
“I’m also not sure how much you get out of scoring a lot of goals against lower league teams anyway. This year we’ve focused more on the in-house games, including against the Lochside boys who have also benefited from these exercises.”
The club are showing faith in two fringe players from last year as Iain MacMillan added: “Evan MacLellan and Ross Campbell have been back-and-fore between Lochside Rovers and Oban Camanachd over the last few seasons, and they’ve not really had a settled run.
“However, this year the manager has shown great confidence in them and included both in our ‘nominated named 10 players’ so they will be with Oban Camanachd all season. I’m sure they will be big players for us, and they will get a good run of games. They are both good players and will bring a lot to the team.”
Ross Macmillan misses out as he completes his four-match suspension.
Next up for Oban Camanachd is a trip south to play Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich a week later but for now, all attention is on Kinlochshiel on Saturday.
Mowi National Division champions Fort William open against Kyles Athletic at An Aird. The sides will once again contest the Drew Ferguson memorial trophy.
New Lovat manager Iain Nicolson leads his side for the first time against his former club Skye at Balgate.
Last year’s Grand Slam winners Kingussie welcome Beauly whilst neighbours Newtonmore travel to Caberfeidh.
Lochaber are amongst the title favourites in shinty’s second tier, and their opening fixture is against Col Glen at Spean Bridge.
Glasgow Mid Argyll have had a good preseason, and they host Strathglass whilst Glenurquhart welcome Kilmallie.
Bute play Inveraray at the Meadows, and the visitors have confirmed that John Smylie and Scott Robertson will be first team co-managers for the coming season, taking over from previous boss Andy Watt. Garry MacPherson continues as first team coach and Ruaraidh Graham is the new first team captain.
The Fort William second team travel to play the Inverness first team with a new management team in place. The side will be led this season by Scott McNeil with help from senior players Mark Grant and Byran Simpson.
The Newtonmore seconds, now with club stalwart Norman Campbell in charge, play Glengarry at the Eilan.
The Kinlochshiel and Glenurquhart second teams meet at Rèaraig whilst the Beauly and Kingussie colts clash at Braeview Park.
Champions Lochside Rovers have set the benchmark in South Division 1, and they begin the new campaign against Ardnamurchan at Strontian.
It will be a rebuild season for Oban Celtic, but they have had a very encouraging preseason which sets them up nicely for their opener against Ballachulish at the Jubilee Park.
Andrew McMurdo stays on in charge of the Inveraray second team who play Aberdour at the Winterton. Ross Anderson captains Inveraray but faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a nasty hand injury preseason.
Kilmory play the Glasgow Mid Argyll seconds at MacRae Park.
The Women’s Camanachd Association league structure has had a revamp to create a Mowi WCA Premier League with a Mowi National below it.
Glenurquhart and Skye play first on Saturday whilst the following day, champions Badenoch travel to Inverness and Mowi Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup winners Lochaber welcome Glasgow Mid Argyll. Kinlochshiel don’t have a game in this seven-team topflight.
The Mowi WCA National Division fixtures start a week later.
Holders Oban Camanachd have been given a bye into the semi-finals following the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup draw.
With Ardnamurchan not taking part this year, there were seven teams in the draw and Oban Camanachd benefited with a free pass into the semis where they will play Glasgow Mid Argyll at Mossfield.
Last year’s runners-up Kyles Athletic open at home to Col Glen and the victors will meet the winners of the tie between Oban Celtic and Inveraray in the last-four of this all-south competition.
