Oban Camanachd 1
Kinlochshiel 1
A depleted Oban Camanachd squad earned a hard-fought point in a 1-1 draw with Kinlochshiel in their 12.30pm throw-up at Mossfield.
Oban Camanachd were without defenders Scott McKillop, Daniel Madej, Daniel Sloss, and Alexander Macdonald, whilst Gregor Macdonald and Scott MacMillan were missing from the midfield.
With attackers Lewis Cameron, Malcolm Clark and Matthew Sloss also unavailable, the red and blacks were significantly short. They were unable to call on Calum MacMillan and Logan Black as one more senior appearance would leave them cup-tied for Lochside’s Bullough Cup final against the Bute second team.
But James MacMillan, Ross Macmillan and Craig Macmillan were able to play despite early doubts.
Kinlochshiel’s Duncan Matheson and Jordan Fraser were late call-offs and full centre Ali Nixon was flanked by Kieran Martin and Seumas Martin across the midfield.
The Oban side took the lead after four minutes. Louie MacFarlane sent the ball up the right to Ross Campbell who sent a quick ball to Daniel MacVicar at the back post and he beat keeper Josh Grant from 15 yards.
MacVicar almost added a second a couple of minutes later, but his shot whistled by the post.
However, with just three minutes remaining, Kinlochshiel substitute Keith MacRae, who had made a difference since coming off the bench at half-time on his return from injury, scored from a tight angle at the edge of the ‘D’. Keeper Cameron Sutherland got a foot to the ball but couldn’t keep it out.
Kinlochshiel almost took both points late on as Keith MacRae’s strike went over Cameron Sutherland but Garry Lord, who had a terrific game at full back, had gone back on the goal line and salvaged a point by parrying MacRae’s strike above his head.
Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “We came flying out of the traps and got the early goal and could have had more. We were the better team in the first half, but they had more of the second period.
“The late goal was a sickener and we were hanging on a bit at the end and were probably glad to hear the final whistle, but I thought a draw was a fair result.
“Lorne Dickie came back and played really well when he came on. He’ll help us out for the rest of the season. He’s only 34 and is a great stick player. Andrew “Papa” MacCuish was also willing to help although we didn’t need him in the end.
“That’s us now until the Kyles game a week Saturday. We had the option of a free Saturday that day as Lochside have the Bullough Cup final, and it was tempting to take it, but we still have six league matches remaining with no games the week after for the Camanachd Cup final, so we are already playing until the end of October at least.”
Kinlochshiel manager Willie MacRae: “We were forced into late changes as we were without Duncan Matheson and Jordan Fraser.
“We didn’t turn up in the first half, but Keith MacRae’s introduction helped turn the game and he almost stole it for us near the end.
“The Mossfield pitch was in excellent condition.”
Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, don’t have a game this weekend. Their next scheduled fixture is a Mowi Premiership match against Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich on Saturday September 14.
Kyles Athletic 5
Skye Camanachd 3
Kyles Athletic were 5-3 winners against Skye Camanachd at the Playing Field, Tighnabruaich.
Player/coach Roddy Macdonald returned for Kyles Athletic and Sorley Thompson and John Kennedy were also back.
Skye’s James Morrison wasn’t available, but Seonaidh-Alex Macleod played after featuring for the second team in the Strathdearn Cup final the previous week.
There was an astonishing glut of goals during the first quarter of the match.
Skye’s Archie Millar claimed his sixth goal over the last four matches when he scored an early brace on four and seven minutes.
However, Scott Macdonald on eight minutes, Ross Macrae from the re-start and another from Scott Macdonald on 11 minutes gave the hosts a 3-2 lead.
Skye’s Jamie Gillies levelled on 20 minutes, but Ross Macrae scored for a second time to put Kyles back in front with only 23 minutes played.
The goals did dry up but Scott Macdonald completed his hat-trick on 78 minutes to make it 5-3.
Kyles player/coach Roddy Macdonald said: “It was a whirlwind first 15 minutes, really end-to-end stuff. Once we got in front, we controlled large spells of the game and played good shinty at times.
“Andrew King was superb at half back. We deserved the win and I’m really pleased to secure our place in the division.
“I’ll be stepping down as manager at the end of the season as playing and managing is extremely difficult. The club would benefit from having a permanent manager in charge.”

Kilmallie 3
Glasgow Mid Argyll (GMA) remain promotion outsiders after twice coming from behind to beat Kilmallie 5-3 at Peterson Park.
GMA were without John McNulty whilst Kilmallie, in their final game of the season, missed Innes Blackhall who started a four-match suspension following his sending off against Fort William. Coach Michael Rodger began a three-match touchline ban after being red carded in the same game.
Kilmallie got off to a great start with Ben MacKinnon scoring on six minutes and Calum MacDougall adding another 60 seconds later.
GMA’s Calum Morrison pulled a goal back on 12 minutes and Ruairidh Ralston levelled the contest on 24 minutes.
Archie MacNiven put Kilmallie back in front on 32 minutes and they held the advantage until the break.
Calum Morrison found the net for a second time to make it 3-3 five minutes into the second half but a quick-fire double from Calum McLay on 72 and 74 minutes won it for the Glasgow side.
GMA are five points behind Fort William with a game in hand.
