Mowi Premiership
Kinlochshiel 1
Oban Camanachd 1
Kinlochshiel and Oban Camanachd shared the points following their 1-1 draw in their noon throw-up at Rèaraig.
Duncan Matheson, Archie MacRae and Zander MacRae all returned to the Kinlochshiel starting line-up after missing the previous week’s game at Beauly.
However, a problem with his heel restricted John MacRae to a place on the bench. Keith MacRae was out injured, whilst Johnnie MacAskill suffered a tight muscle in the warm-up so Kieran Martin started at wing centre in his place.
Oban Camanachd pair Louie MacFarlane and Lewis Cameron recovered from knocks suffered the previous week, with Cameron dropping onto the bench alongside his brother Daniel Cameron and James MacMillan. Daniel MacCuish shrugged off a groin issue and there was a start for Ross Macmillan who has scored four goals over his last two matches.
The pitch was in great condition on a glorious day and the highlights from a flat first half were two excellent Cammy Sutherland saves.
At the other end, Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae was booked by referee John Angus Gillies for taking Ross Macmillan down when he was through on goal.
Oban Camanachd’s Lewis Cameron had been suffering with an arm injury but was introduced at the interval.
The second half was much better and Oban Camanachd took the lead on 63 minutes. Matthew Sloss played on a long free-hit and although keeper Josh Grant dived to save with his right foot, substitute Lewis Cameron ran in on the left to lift the ball over the grounded keeper.
Kinlochshiel moved full back Finlay MacRae to full centre, Donald Nixon to buckshee and brought John MacRae off the bench with 15 minutes remaining.
The switches paid off as the home side equalised on 80 minutes. Ali Nixon’s hit-in from the right wasn’t dealt with by the Oban defence and when John MacRae tried to take a shot on the volley, the ball fell for Jordan Fraser who took the ball to the left before slamming it low to the keeper’s left on his backhand.
Kinlochshiel’s Finlay MacRae turned in a man of the match performance whilst Oban keeper Cammy Sutherland kept his side in it with two top saves in first half. Scott McKillop also played well.
Speaking after the final whistle, Kinlochshiel boss Willie MacRae said: “It’s as strong an Oban side as we’ve seen for a while. We pushed Finlay MacRae into midfield and Donald Nixon to buckshee forward as we went for it and I’m happy with the point.”
Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “I thought we could have won it, but we’ll take the point. We lost Louie MacFarlane, ankle, before a recurrence of a groin injury forced Daniel MacCuish off, all within the first 20 minutes. Daniel Cameron had to come off too, so these injuries are my main concern.”
This Saturday, holders Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL contractors, play Kyles Athletic in the Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter finals.
Gareth Evans said: “The injuries were the downside from Saturday as we’ll need them all fit.
“We know we have three games at Mossfield to retain the Macaulay, but it will be difficult against Kyles as they are our biggest rivals in this competition and it’s a south derby.”
Glenurquhart 2
Kyles Athletic 2
Glenurquhart came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Kyles Athletic at Blairbeg.
Glenurquhart’s Ally MacKintosh remained out with a broken foot, but Lachie Smith recovered from a blow to the foot suffered the previous week against Skye to play. Fergus Robertson was out with a knee injury.
Kyles player/coach Roddy Macdonald was unavailable, but Andrew King returned following a hamstring injury. Will Cowie and Innes Macdonald started outfield for the first time since March.
A backhand strike on the right from former Skye player James Pringle went through keeper Stuart MacKintosh’s legs to give Kyles the lead on 15 minutes.
Conor Kennedy doubled the visitors’ lead on 31 minutes with a similar finish from the edge of the ‘D’.
Glenurquhart pulled a goal back three minutes before the turnaround when Ryan Porter took the ball down to score from around the penalty spot.
On 54 minutes, youngster Doug Brockie scored his first senior goal, beating stand-in keeper Jack Whyte to make it 2-2 and give Glenurquhart their first point of the season.
Glenurguhart boss Davie Stewart said: “We fought until the end and deserved at least a point. Everyone played their part. It was a day to remember for Doug Brockie.”
Kyles Athletic’s Will Cowie said: “I thought we were the better team, especially up front, for almost an hour and Stuart MacKintosh made several super saves to keep them in it. Glenurquhart then started to dominate the centre line and our hitting could have been better. It’s disappointing as I think Glenurquhart only had a couple of shots on target.”

Kilmallie’s Innes Blackhall faces a spell on the sidelines after being sent off by referee Ross Brown a minute from time.
The one downside for Inveraray was a knee injury which rules Ruaraidh Graham out for the rest of the season. Graham needed five stitches to the wound on his knee and an x-ray later confirmed a fractured knee cap with recovery time expected to be between three to six months.

Oban Celtic’s Kyle MacFarlane and Col Glen’s Scott Symons were both sent off by referee Craig Scott in stoppage time.

The Oban side lost Calum Macmillan just after that with a bad foot injury.

Ballachullish led through Duncan MacDonald on 21 minutes but Mark Bain levelled on 29 minutes. However, with just 10 minutes remaining, Ross Maclean scored to earn Ballachulish a share of the spoils.

Kilmory beat the Kyles Athletic juniors 5-0 at Tighnabruaich.
The home side built up a 3-0 interval lead through Craig Taylor on 31 minutes, Kian Crawford on 35 minutes and Nairn Jackson a minute before the break.
Kilmory’s Craig Taylor was sent off by referee Euan Pearson after 74 minutes but that didn’t stop Sandy Leiper adding a fourth goal three minutes later with Euan Gilmour rounding off the 5-0 win 10 minutes from time.

Oban Camanachd and Lochaber meet in Scottish semi-finals
Oban Camanachd will have home advantage against Lochaber following the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-final draw made at Lovat’s Balgate ground.
The draw was made by referee Steven MacLachlan who is recovering well from a critical cardiac incident that took place when he was the man in the middle at a match between Caberfeidh and Kinlochshiel in early April.
He was presented with a new strip as he looks set to make his return to officiating as one of the goal judges at the cottages.com MacTavish Cup final between Fort William and Kingussie at the Eilan on Saturday June 8.
Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans knows his players will have a tough match against a Lochaber side who swept Kyles Athletic away in the last round.
He said: “Lochaber more than deserve their place in the quarter-finals for their performance against Kyles. They are a dangerous side that score lots of goals. We played them at Mossfield in the second league game of the season and although we led 3-1, they pegged us back to an eventual 3-3 draw. They never give up. We’re happy that the tie is at Mossfield as it will be tough.”
Fort William welcome Glasgow Mid Argyll to An Aird meaning at least one side from outwith the Mowi Premiership will make the semi-finals.
Fort William will host this year’s final and already have the cottages.com MacTavish Cup final against Kingussie at the Eilan this Saturday to look forward to.
Co-manager Alan Knox said: “We are happy with the draw and delighted to get a home tie. GMA will obviously be up for it as both teams know what is at stake. Whilst it’s a massive tie to forward to, we have to keep our focus on our next few games as they are also important for the club.”
Skye Camanachd has been given a tough clash against Lovat at Balgate. Skye manager Willie MacDonald said: “That’s a difficult one to get. Lovat will have a good squad ready for this tie and I notice second team captain Fraser Heath played for them in the last round of the Camanachd Cup. He’s a good player to be able to call on. I’m sure it will be close.”
Beauly’s prize for beating Kinlochshiel in the previous round is a tie against holders Kingussie at Braeview Park.
Ahead of the draw, Steven MacLachlan said: “I was one of the officials for Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup Final in 2023. It is truly the biggest event in the shinty calendar and I wish the best of luck to all the teams.”
The Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup quarter-final draw is:
Beauly v Kingussie
Fort William v Glasgow Mid Argyll
Oban Camanachd v Lochaber
Lovat v Skye Camanachd
The ties are scheduled for Saturday July 6.
The 2024 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup final takes place at An Aird, Fort William on Saturday September 21 and discounted tickets, with 27 per cent off, are currently available at www.shinty.com/tickets.
Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter finals
Both south Artemis Macaulay Cup quarter-finals take place on Saturday June 8.
Oban Camanachd and Kyles Athletic meet at Mossfield in what is always a keenly contested affair.
Meantime, there is an all-National Division clash between Glasgow Mid Argyll and Bute at Peterson Park.
