Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round
Oban Camanachd 5
Newtonmore 3
After extra time
“It was a game that had everything,” was Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans’ assessment after his side defeated Newtonmore 5-3 after extra time in their Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round tie at Mossfield.
Gregor Macdonald returned to the home starting line-up with James MacMillan dropping onto the bench where he was joined by Ross Macmillan, Daniel Cameron and Alexander Macdonald.
Newtonmore’s Rory Kennedy faces at least six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a fractured arm against Fort William the previous week and Steven Macdonald served the third game of his four-match ban.
Duncan MacPherson and Michael Russell were still out but Conor Jones and Iain Robinson returned to the starting line-up. Fifteen-year-old Joe Coyle was given a first start.
Newtonmore came within a whisker of taking the lead following Cameron McNiven’s turn and shot from around the penalty spot, but the ball came off the inside of the post before rolling across the goal line and away.
The opener came at the other end as Lewis Cameron put Oban Camanachd ahead on 22 minutes, finishing off a good move.
Newtonmore drew level on 69 minutes. Drew MacDonald lofted the ball in on the goal from wide on the right and it seemed to move in slow motion as it took a slight deflection on the way past keeper Cammy Sutherland.
Oban Camanachd regained the lead just 60 seconds later as Ross Macmillan, on for Malcolm Clark, took a ball from the right and flashed a backhand effort across the keeper into the far side of the net from a tight angle.
Newtonmore drew level for a second time on 78 minutes when Iain Robinson touched home a corner from the right which evaded Daniel Sloss.
Cammy Sutherland made a good save above his head to deny Iain Robinson a late winner before referee Craig Scott took the tie into extra time.
Oban Camanachd took the lead for a third time on 103 minutes when Daniel MacVicar made a 40-yard run forward before slipping the ball home - and this time they stayed in front.
A couple of minutes later, Matthew Sloss finished well on his left side and it was Sloss again on 110 minutes, turning the ball home after a scramble to make it 5-2.
Newtonmore tried to fight back and Iain Robinson got his second on 113 minutes, finishing from close range.
Gareth Evans said: “It’s great to be in the next round. I thought we played some of our best shinty this season in the first half, especially the forwards who moved the ball about really well. We just lacked that end product.
“Newtonmore were dangerous but we had more possession. At 2-2, the last 10 minutes before extra time were nervy but we surged ahead during extra time.
“Their keeper Kenny Ross made some great saves and Joe Coyle looks a terrific prospect. We had good performances too, including from our 15-year-old, Matthew Sloss, whilst Daniel MacCuish was also really good. Malcolm Clark was unlucky to be substituted but we needed to change something up front to score more goals. Malcolm was really good when he came back on, this time playing on the wing. Scott McKillop and Cameron McNiven had a great battle.”
This Saturday, Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, face Kinlochshiel at Rèaraig.
Lochaber 8
Kyles Athletic 1
Eyebrows were raised throughout the shinty community when news filtered through of Lochaber’s resounding 8-1 win over Kyles Athletic in their 1pm throw-up at Spean Bridge.
Lochaber’s Barry Macdonald was unavailable, whilst Duncan MacKinnon, Seonaidh MacLeod, Findlay MacDonald and Gregor Cameron made up a strong bench.
Kyles Athletic’s Andrew King remained out with a hamstring injury whilst the visitors were again without keeper John Whyte, so Innes Macdonald continued to deputise. John Kennedy and David Zavaroni were missing and Will Cowie and Sorley Thomson were only able to take places on the bench due to injury where they were joined by Robbie Macleod who came out of retirement to help out.
Lochaber got off to a great start, scoring after just 27 seconds, when Pat Toal’s cross from the right fell for Shaun Nicolson who finished low into the net from the right of the ‘D’.
Max Campbell made it 2-0 on six minutes, shooting low into the corner of the goal on his left side following Ben Delaney’s pass.
Stuart Callison added a third on 10 minutes, scoring from a tight angle on the left following Connor Sweeney’s short corner from the left. The home support could hardly believe what they were watching as Pat Toal made it 4-0 with just 18 minutes played. Toal brought down Conor Sweeney’s crossfield pass before shooting high across the keeper from wide on the right.
Max Campbell got his second on 34 minutes, finishing from just outside the ‘D’ on the right with Ben Delaney the provider.
Pat Toal scored his second with a low shot into the goal from distance on 52 minutes after good play from Stuart Callison and Ben Delaney.
Ben Delaney’s snapshot from the edge of the ‘D’ earned him a deserved goal on 61 minutes to make it 7-0 and Max Campbell completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes with Ben Delaney again the supplier with a ball from the left. With five minutes remaining, Kyles Athletic’s James Pringle capitalised on a defensive slip to score from the left.
Lochaber boss Ally Ferguson spoke after the final whistle: “We’ve pulled a good squad together with boys who have worked hard at training and it clicked for us today.
“It’s still a work in progress with the team though and we recognise Kyles had a few lads missing. But it’s the “Scottish Cup” and from our perspective, the performance and result were pleasing for the team, the club and our supporters.
“The only downside was the knock Martin Johnstone took. He had to come off to get a cut to his forehead stitched up.
“We’re delighted to be in the hat for the next round and feel we’ve earned our right to be there.”
Kyles player/coach Roddy Macdonald added: “That was unacceptable and I’m embarrassed by that performance. If we don’t turn it around soon, we’ll be playing National Division shinty next season and for many years to come.”
