Shrek the Musical JR brings music and laughter to Strachur
Strachur Memorial Hall played host to sell-out audiences on September 21-22, as Strachur and District Youth Drama students delighted attendees with their vibrant production of Shrek the Musical JR.
This family-friendly musical comedy followed the much-loved tale of Shrek, an ogre who embarks on an adventure to rescue a princess from a dragon, only to discover that the greatest challenge he faces is learning to believe in himself and open his heart to others.
Director Sheena Dowse reflected on the deeper themes at the heart of the show, saying: “Shrek’s journey of self-discovery challenges us to reflect on our own biases and boundaries, encouraging greater understanding of ourselves and others.
"The cast and crew have experienced their own personal journeys in this production, learning about each other and themselves as they worked together to bring this musical to life.”
Shrek The Musical JR. was a spectacular production filled with heart, humour, and unforgettable performances. Leading the charge, Pippa Maclellan shone in the role of Shrek, offering a compelling portrayal of the misunderstood ogre.
Her powerful performance captured Shrek’s emotional journey, much to the audience’s delight.
Skye Rose Wong-Walsh delivered a standout performance as Princess Fiona, bringing sass, charm, and stunning vocals to the role.
The chemistry between Fiona and Shrek was electric, while Lexie Downs and Alexander Liddell, as young and teen Fiona, added depth and emotion to their respective performances.

Tiffany McArthur’s Donkey had the audience in stitches, with her hilarious and energetic performance making for a perfect comedic counterpart to Shrek. Meanwhile, Lucie MacLeod’s Lord Farquaad bedazzled with her larger-than-life portrayal of the self-absorbed villain, earning plenty of laughs during the character’s dramatic meltdowns.
Ailish Brown impressed in her triple roles as Mama Ogre, the Wicked Witch, and the fearsome Dragon.
Ailish’s command of song and dance was on full display as she brought depth and individuality to each character.
The ensemble of fairytale creatures added vibrancy to the production. India Moss excelled in her multiple roles as Gingy, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Papa Bear, while Iris Sainsbury (Mama Bear) and Aaleah McArthur (Ugly Duckling) delivered their parts with confidence and charisma. Darragh Watson’s portrayal of the Big Bad Wolf was a highlight, and the trio of pigs - Millie Blair, Lily Sheriff, and Ava Appleton - added charm with their individual flair.
Katie Wilson jnr as the authoritative Captain of the Guard and Evan Thompson as the diligent Sergeant at Arms brought a strong sense of order to the stage.
Pennie McArthur shone as Little Ogre and Peter Pan, with Lexie Downs and Alexander Liddell impressing in their dual roles as Pinocchio and Baby Bear.

The youngest members of the cast—Aria Thompson, Sarah Halley, Sarah Liddell, Neve Crame, A.J. Mathers, and Daniel Griffin—brought a lively energy to their portrayals of fairytale and woodland creatures, contributing to the joyful atmosphere.
The production was elevated by imaginative costumes, striking makeup, and seamless staging, while the lighting and sound effects enhanced the fairytale magic.
From lively dance numbers to impressive vocal performances, every element of the show came together effortlessly, earning deafening applause from the audience.
With music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the book Shrek by William Steig.
The original Broadway production garnered 12 Drama Desk Awards and eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.
Adapted for younger performers by Timothy Allen McDonald, this version of the show was a triumph for Strachur and District Youth Drama.

Strachur and District Youth Drama, in collaboration with Strachur Community Theatre, is excited to announce their next production: Beauty and the Beast, coming in the new year. Following the success of previous performances, there is growing anticipation for what lies ahead.
Our drama group currently welcomes students from across the region, including Inveraray, Tighnabruich, Dunoon, and areas in between.
This is a wonderful opportunity for young people from diverse backgrounds to connect, develop performance skills, build confidence, and strengthen teamwork in a fun, supportive environment.
New students will be welcome from Monday October 21. Sessions for S1-S6 will run from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, and P1-P6 from 6.00pm to 7.00pm at Strachur Memorial Hall. For those travelling from further afield, we can offer flexibility with the start time.
