Oban Camanachd 1
Skye Camanachd 2
Oban Camanachd and Skye Camanachd went into their 1pm throw-up at Mossfield with different priorities.
Oban Camanachd had more than an eye on this Saturday’s Artemis Macaulay Cup tie against Glasgow Mid Argyll and they were without five regulars as Scott McKillop, Lewis Cameron, Gregor MacDonald, Malcolm Clark and James MacMillan all missed out through a mixture of injury, holidays and work commitments.
Injury restricted Louie MacFarlane to a place on the bench, whilst there was a first start for Logan Black. Garry Lord started a game for the first time in two-and-a-half years.
Skye knew victory would go a long way to preserving their top-flight status for another season.
Full forward Dan MacDonald’s one-match suspension was up, whilst Ross Nicolson recovered from injury sufficiently to take a place on the bench. Ruaraidh Macleod was working offshore.
Both keepers were called into action before Skye custodian Ryan Morrison made a brilliant stop, tipping away a Daniel Madej effort from left of centre which was heading for the top corner of the net on the keeper’s left side.
Skye broke the deadlock with five first half minutes remaining.
John Gillies played on Kenny Cushnie’s hit-in from the left and Dan MacDonald, in a central position, sent a weighted pass to Archie Millar on the left who took a touch before slipping the ball by the advancing Cammy Sutherland in the home goal from just inside the ‘D’.
Cammy Sutherland made a terrific point-blank stop with his stick to deny Archie Millar a second.
The next goal came at the other end as Garry Lord pulled Oban Camanachd level on 66 minutes. Substitute Louie MacFarlane lofted a corner in from the right and Garry Lord ran into the danger area, taking the ball down with his legs before swiping it high into the net for a great finish.
Oban Camanachd almost took the lead in the closing stages when Matthew Sloss evaded Ryan Harrison’s diving challenge, but he steered the ball past the far post from the right of the ‘D’.
Skye then regained the lead when Jamie Gillies exchanged passes with William MacKinnon after Scott MacMillan had conceded a free-hit on the right. Jamie Gillies sent the ball into the middle where John Gillies ran in, just ahead of keeper Cammy Sutherland, to touch the ball home with 90 minutes on the clock.
There was still one more chance as Oban Camanachd almost equalised for a second time when Matthew Sloss found Ross Macmillan to the left, outside the ‘D’, but his strike went by the far post.
This was Oban Camanachd’s first defeat at Mossfield for almost a year and manager Gareth Evans said: “We just didn’t get going against what was a big and physical Skye side. We needed to play the ball wide more often but didn’t do that and we didn’t find Ross Macmillan often enough.
“It was good to see Logan Black make his first start and for Garry Lord to start too after being out for so long. Garry took his goal well. Daniel Sloss, Daniel Madej and Andy MacDonald were our best players, with Ross Campbell also good when he came on.
“Too many were below par though. I thought Skye’s William MacKinnon was man-of-the match.
“Daniel MacCuish took a blow to the head and, despite him wearing a helmet, he needed to go to hospital to get it checked out.
“We could have got something from the game with a couple of good chances at the end but I’m not sure we’d have deserved it.”
Skye manager Willie MacDonald said: “We’ve had a couple of away games where we’ve performed well enough but come home with nothing, so we’re delighted to take the points from a notoriously difficult venue. It’s just reward for all the hard work the boys have put in.”
Kinlochshiel 6
Kyles Athletic 1
Kinlochshiel were too strong for Kyles Athletic, winning 6-1 in their 3pm throw-up at Rèaraig.
David Falconer started for Kinlochshiel who were without Finlay MacRae in their starting line-up.
Kyles travelled north without Roddy Macdonald, Andrew King and Will Cowie. There were starting places for Grant Profit and Andrew Fraser, whilst former Lochcarron player Liam Arnott was their only substitute.
The home side began well and created three good chances before they scored. Archie MacRae got clear of his marker and went one-on-one with keeper Jack Whyte but pushed the ball wide. Then Keith MacRae found himself free on the ‘D’, but he hit the crossbar. Archie MacRae went close again but this time Jack Whyte made a great save.
Kinlochshiel went ahead on 42 minutes when Archie MacRae got free on the left and his shot went through the keeper’s legs. Keith MacRae added a second from the ‘D’ on the stroke of half-time.
Keith MacRae scored his second on 65 minutes with a well-worked goal as his brother John MacRae set him up to score from the right of the ‘D’.
Kinlochshiel, with Ali Nixon turning in a man-of-the-match performance, finished with a flurry and Archie MacRae went on a solo run on the left before firing by the keeper on 81 minutes to notch his second.
John MacRae got on the scoresheet a couple of minutes later, running at the defence and using his strength to push his marker to the side before hammering the ball home from 15 yards.
Archie MacRae was proving a handful, and he completed his hat trick on 85 minutes, with another great solo goal, blasting the ball inside the keeper’s left-hand post.
Kyles got some consolation when, following a good move on the right, James Pringle slotted a cross ball by goalie Josh Grant to make the final score 6-1.

Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals preview
The Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals take place on Saturday July 20 with this unique tournament guaranteeing a televised final between a south and north side at Mossfield Stadium on Saturday August 17.
Holders Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, meet Glasgow Mid Argyll at Mossfield.
Oban boss Gareth Evans said: “Gregor MacDonald should be free of his calf injury, whilst Malcolm Clark and James MacMillan are also back. Louie MacFarlane managed to play from the bench against Skye on Saturday, so we’ll see how he is.
“Andy MacDonald suffered a blow to the arm against Skye but he’s a hardy boy and I think he’ll be fine. Scott McKillop and Lewis Cameron will still be out. We are missing their influence.”
Craig Anderson should return for Glasgow Mid Argyll, but Cammie McCue is suspended.
Lovat will have Fraser Heath and Drew Howie back against a Kingussie side expected to be at full strength for their semi-final at Braeview Park, Beauly.
The sides met in the league last Saturday when Kingussie beat an understrength Lovat 4-1.
Oban sides return to action
Oban Celtic and Lochside Rovers return to action on Saturday July 20.
Celtic are scheduled to face Inveraray at the Winterton, whilst Lochside Rovers have a Bullough Cup semi-final against holders Kyles Athletic second team at Tighnabruaich.
Glengarry and Kilmory meet again
Glengarry and Kilmory meet in the Camanachd Association’s Single Team Cup final at the Jubilee, Ballachulish, on Saturday July 20.
This is a repeat of last year’s final which Glengarry won 3-0 with Raymond Robertson scoring twice, either side of Shaun Nicolson’s effort.
Camanachd Cup semi-final draw
Oban Camanachd will meet Lovat in a repeat of last year’s semi-final following the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup last-four draw made in Inverness.
Oban Camanachd manager Gareth Evans said: “Both teams will fancy their chances in this one. We’ve yet to meet this season. We were due to meet at their place in April and although we travelled north, the referee called off the game just ahead of throw-up as the pitch was unplayable. We won 2-0 in last year’s semi-final so I’m sure Lovat will be after revenge.”
Lovat Boss Jamie Matheson added: “We are definitely after revenge. Both goalkeepers – our Stuart MacDonald and their Cammy Sutherland – performed well in last year’s tie and they might need to do so again as it’s two good, evenly matched sides when everyone is available.”
The tie takes place on Saturday August 3 at An Aird, Fort William, and will be broadcast live on television.
Fort William are looking forward to their third cup semi-final of the season but they will have to get by holders Kingussie if they are to reach the final.
Kingussie were 3-1 winners when the sides met in this year’s MacTavish Cup final after Fort William had taken an early lead.
Co-manager Alan Knox said: “We thought we did well against Kingussie in the MacTavish and we certainly learned a lot that day which we can hopefully bring to this match. It’s also an opportunity to reach the final which will be played on our An Aird pitch so there’s no question we’ll be up for it.”
Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick added: “Fort William might play in the league below us, but they’ve had good results this season and we know already what they’re about from the MacTavish. All ties are hard at this stage, whoever you get.”
The tie between Fort William and Kingussie is scheduled for Saturday August 10 at Spean Bridge and will be broadcast live on television.
The 2024 Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup final takes place at An Aird, Fort William, on Saturday September 21 and discounted tickets are available from the Camanachd Association website.
