While the ‘summer’ weather may not have been great this year, the beaming smiles of many youngsters brought their own sunshine to play days at the Rural Complex in Torlundy.
Run by the Lochaber Rural Education Trust charity, children had a great time taking part in a number of activities, which were not only great fun but also taught them a bit about the practical realities of life in rural areas.
From colouring in pictures of farm animals to nature walks in the surrounding countryside, making and baking jam tarts, to actually hand churning butter, everyone enjoyed the activities and, of course, eating some of the results.
It was very much a hands on experience for everyone who came along, with several willing volunteers guiding them through each process to make sure that children were able to make the most of their time.
Isabel Campbell of the Trust said: “It is always a great thing to have youngsters visit us and take part in traditional activities.
“We do things such as baking to give them an idea of how things are made and at the same time have great fun doing it. They all had turns at turning the handle on the churn and were amazed when the cream turned into butter, which they were then able to spread on scones for break time and also take home the jam tarts they made.
“We have lots of activities going on during school term including ‘seed to supper’ where classes plant seeds and tend them right through to harvesting them, cooking and eating. We thought that we would like to give parents the opportunity for a break in the holidays by bringing their children here for a few hours and it has certainly proved to be very popular”.
