Swim team members get just rewards for water work

Lochaber Leisure Centre Swim Team 2022 awards night recently took place at Fort William Shinty Club.

It has been another successful year for the club. Calum Stewart became its first Scottish age-group champion in 50m front crawl, as well as taking a bronze medal in 50m butterfly and 100m front crawl.

 

Calum also won the trophy for best 13-year-old swimmer at the 2022 North District Championships, winning five events and finishing second in two others.

 

The club also has three swimmers with times for national events - Calum Stewart, Elizabeth Morgan and Charliegh Adams.

 

This year’s Scottish age group championships take place next month and the club has five swimmers with consideration times: Calum Stewart, Elizabeth Morgan, Charliegh Adams, Mya MacCallum and Sean Cann.

 

The recently reformed Highland Swim Team includes the five swimmers above plus Lauren Jones.

 

Some winners from the awards night were:

 

Most improved 15-year-old and under female: 1 Shammon Cann; 2 Mya MacCallum; 3 Yasmin MacCallum.

 

Most improved 15-year-old and under male: 1 Ruairidh MacMaster; 2 Sean Cann; 3 Danylo Chornyi.

 

Most improved female 12-year-old and under: 1 Isla Cant; 2 Darcey Dunlop; 3 Mila Ball.

 

Most improved male 12-year-old and under: 1 James Exeter; 2 Merry Wells; 3 Charlie McNamara.

 

Various other medals and trophies were handed out, culminating in swimmer of the year awards to Elizabeth Morgan and Calum Stewart.

 

New Lochaber Leisure Centre Swim Team chairperson Tracey MacCallum thanked everyone for their hard work, especially the coaches who give up their time week in week out to be poolside at every training session.

 

Head coach Steven Martin will be retiring from his role in July, though the club is delighted he has pledged to coach one night a week from the summer.

 

"We are grateful for his knowledge and experience," said Tracey.

 

Anyone with core skills and enthusiasm for nurturing talent within a small club is encouraged to come along and see the team in action.
