Lochaber fiddle player Anna Robertson has been shortlisted as a semi-finalist at this year’s BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician 2025.
Anna was brought up on Knoydart, where she first began learning the instrument.
Growing up, she was a regular attendee of local fèisean which first sparked her love for music and playing with others. The opportunities to play locally, supporting and performing alongside prominent musicians in Scotland and in Knoydart village hall, she says were a catalyst to her musical path.
During high school, she joined the Lochaber Ceilidh Trail in 2019, and represented Scotland as an ambassador for traditional music in Chengdu, China. During her studies, she was a gold medallist at the Lochaber Mòd and a medalist in the National Mòd in Glasgow.
Anna has been taught by respected local Lochaber musicians Eilidh Shaw and Iain MacFarlane and recently graduated with an honours degree in traditional music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.
She has played at major events including Celtic Connections, the Edinburgh International Festival and the ninth China Young Cultural Ambassadors Festival in the far east, as well as performing in the GRIT Orchestra.
In 2024, Anna formed an all-female band called Dàna with fellow graduates. She also plays in the Black Hills Ceilidh Band from Knoydart.
Each of the semi-finalists will perform for 10 minutes on October 13 at BBC Pacific Quay in Glasgow alongside guitarist Jenn Butterworth and pianist Jen Austin in front of a live audience and judging panel. Six will then advance to the finals, held at the annual Celtic Connections Festival on February 2 2025.
