A successful season of conservation work has been celebrated with a ceilidh and free fish suppers for the volunteers who made the vital task possible.
Tarbert Action on Coastal Litter Team was set up this summer in response to concerns about marine rubbish and its consequences for nature and tourism, as well as its impact on local residents.
“We’ve been delighted with the positive responses to efforts from the local community and are looking forward to next year,” organiser Jenny Hunt told the Advertiser.
“Building on the many years of beach cleans around Tarbert we wanted to get more people involved and a wider range of beaches cleaned.”
The new team has taken on the cleaning of four beaches so far: White Shore, Dubh ca Linne and Escart Bay with local volunteers, and the causeway to Barmore Island in conjunction with Stonefield Castle Hotel staff and Balfour Beatty.
In total, 600m of shore has been cleaned and 110 bags of litter weighing a total of 396 kg have been removed.
The group’s last clean of the year on Saturday October 19 was followed by a celebration ceilidh in Tarbert with free fish and chips for the volunteers provided by Silver Darlings and music by the Fyne Thyme ceilidh band.
Jenny added: “We aim to make our events sociable and fun as well as having an impact, so we end each one with a drink, cake and a chat.”
