Simple, yet revolutionary all-weather dryer
The Shieling Dryer was born on the Isle of Mull, as the result of an accident.
David tells us ’Our precious clinker-built puffer lifeboat was damaged on the slip at Castle Duart. To mend it, we had to dry the timbers. How could we do that on Mull in the winter?
Here’s the answer! We put a Shieling tent over it, left the ends open so that the wind blew through by the Venturi effect. It all worked perfectly, and has been drying clothes for us and many others ever since.
Imagine drying your clothes, boots, uniforms and workwear, outside, all hours, for free - all year round. So simple, so good and it replaces the tumble dryer. We’re saving planet whilst saving money!’
The name Shieling comes from the summer dwellings of Highland shepherds, tending their flocks by mountain and shore.
As the Canadian Boat Song says:
“From the lone shieling of the misty island,
Mountains divide us, and the waste of seas –
Yet still the blood is strong, the heart is Highland,
and we in dreams behold the Hebrides".
John and Jane Noddings, who run award winning Seaview B&B in the Ross of Mull, kindly put this post on Facebook:
Thank you John and Jane!
Jane goes on to say:
“When I first came across the Shieling dryer all those years ago I was very sceptical. And then I saw it in action at another B&B on the island and was immediately sold on the idea. It’s a very simple concept brilliantly adapted into a remarkable environmentally and cost effective drying solution”.
If you feel sceptical like Jane did, why not take two months free trial by clicking here - Shieling Dryer Free 2-Month Trial!
