Players from Ardnamurchan and Portree high schools joined 43 teenage girls aged 13 to 17 at Braeview Park on Wednesday June 12 for a pre-camp meeting ahead of the USA Girls Performance Camp later this month.
Supported by Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport (ICFGF), the seven-day camp will take place at Lawrenceville School near New York and will provide high-quality shinty coaching.
Alan Gray, Active Schools co-ordinator for Ardnamurchan said: “The girls are ecstatic. There’s so much energy spilling out of them as they all know it is a once in a lifetime opportunity and they are so eager to put into practice everything they have learnt over the last 18 months.
“They have each completed a leadership programme as part of the camp build-up and we are in a position now in Ardnamurchan where there are more girls playing shinty than there are boys.”
Calum MacPherson, chief executive of ICFGF, added: “Young people currently growing up in the Highlands will play a critical part in the future energy economy of the region.
“As this fantastic initiative shows, there are no barriers to what this up-coming generation can achieve, given the right opportunities. These young people will be tomorrow’s leaders on and off the field."
Other schools taking part are Kingussie high, Kilchuimen Academy and Inverness Royal Academy.
