In a world filled with abundance and excess, the idea of “less is more” can seem counterintuitive. Yet, this principle often proves itself, especially in the kitchen.
Imagine cooking a simple piece of fish. Overcomplicating it with too many spices or ingredients can easily overwhelm the natural flavour.
However, with just a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a touch of olive oil or butter, the essence of the fish shines through, delicate yet profound. It’s in the simplicity that the beauty is found.
Fishermen work hard, for long hours, with dangerous equipment, going out upon challenging seas to bring a harvest. Yet that prize at its best often needs the touch of simplicity.
This concept applies not only to cooking but to life itself. We often feel the need to do more, achieve more, and accumulate more.
However, it’s in moments of quiet, when we strip away the unnecessary, that we find clarity, peace, and true purpose.
Jesus himself highlighted this truth when he praised the widow who gave two small coins at the temple.
Others gave out of their abundance, but she gave all she had to live on, showing that the value of a gift lies not in its size, but in the heart with which it is given.
Luke 21:3-4: “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
In both cooking and life, it’s often the simple things, done with intention and love, that bring the greatest results.
Less truly is more.
