You may have seen lots of young – and a few older – people out and about in the area recently, scanning cards at lampposts.
Despite poor Kintyre weather, they have been out enthusiastically and energetically collecting points for a virtual game designed to encourage the nation’s children and their families to get active.
Inspired by this challenge, on a recent family outing, our eight-year old - on his no gears bike! - cycled up to Campbeltown Grammar School at the top of Woodlands Drive to collect bonus points from a hidden ‘gem’.
We had never seen him cycle up a hill with such determination and enthusiasm. It’s been lovely joining in, meeting friends along the way and sharing in the fun.
There are many ways in which a competition like this illustrates the challenges, goals and rewards of life. It reminds me of the encouragement the Bible gives to run the race of life with a goal in mind and with endurance.
What is it that motivates you? Where are you heading? Where will the treasure your heart follows take you?
Life is full of hills and unexpected challenges; hurdles to get over. What do we do when we meet them? Give up, go another way or press on?
The Bible teaches us that nothing will bring greater happiness and contentment in this life than wholeheartedly following Jesus. He created us and designed the race for us to run. He will be our coach and companion, with us in every challenge, and will be there at the end when you win the prize.
