Crowds gathered at Station Square, George Street, Stafford Street, North Pier and along the esplanade, with everyone vying for the best spot to enjoy the display, which was organised by BID4Oban and Love Oban.

Andrew Spence, chief executive of BID4Oban, estimates there were over 4,000 people in attendance.

He said: “It was absolutely amazing to see so many businesses open late and people down the street enjoying themselves. I walked along the front towards The Oban Inn at quarter past seven to check if everything was okay and I couldn’t believe the crowds.”

The vibrant multi-colour display caused oohs and aahs from the audience and passengers on a CalMac ferry were in for a treat as they sailed away from the port while fireworks whizzed into the night sky.

At the Oban Festive Lights stall in Station Square, there were raffle tickets available to buy, as well as glow in the dark toys, which sold out completely. The hard-working festive lights team managed to raise £653 on the night.

There were queues outside of the town’s fish and chip shops and Dougie Dan’s food van proved popular at Station Square. Those with a sweet tooth made their way over to The Pokey Hat, which stayed open late for revellers to get their hot chocolate and ice cream fix.

Andrew said holding the display the weekend before Bonfire Night was a great success and something organisers hope to do again in the future.

He added: “It means you’re not taking kids out on a school night and it gives more opportunities to local businesses when people are coming into town earlier for dinner or drinks.”

Organisers would like to thank Fireworx Scotland Ltd for staging the event, the Auxiliary Coastguard for ensuring everyone stayed safe, the Northern Lighthouse Board for providing premises for the fireworks to be set off and everyone at Oban Festive Lights for their input.
