New confidence and great skills were on show when Mid Argyll Rugby Club’s under-14 girls travelled recently to Islay.
A competitive six-aside match on January 11 saw the determined young players battle through the rain to a close-fought victory.
Th three Mid Argyll girls that travelled to the game joined forces with Campbeltown Kintyre Rugby Club.
“The girls played six-aside in a very competitive game which was try for try,” the girls’ coach Drew Buckley explained. “Some great skills were on show with lots of progress compared to their last event in Campbeltown.”
Drew, who is a community development coach, also said it was one of the best games she had seen all the girls from each team play.
She added: “The coaches chose one player from each club as the players of the day. A big well done to Ciara and Maisie from Islay and Campbeltown, and especially well done to Cara from Mid Argyll who grew a new-found confidence on the pitch.
“A big thank-you to Islay Rugby Club for hosting us with a great spread post game, and for carting us about the island. We look forward to returning in a couple of months.”
For their part, the hosts were also delighted with the enthusiasm and quality of play on display at the event.
A spokesperson for the Islay club said: “The Ileachs represented themselves with Mid Argyll and Campbeltown joining forces. It was a close fought game, with the visitors narrowly winning.
“Congratulations to all the players for a really entertaining and enjoyable match. Thanks to everyone that made it across on a cold January morning to support the girls and a huge thank you to Karen Siddall and Margaret Brown for organising the logistics and all the planning that goes into making days like these happen.”
Girls Academy
Well done to two of Mid Argyll RFC’s U16 Girls, Jodie Allen and Violet Turnbull, who travelled to Dalziel RFC on Sunday, January 19 for the Glasgow and West U16 GRGS trials.
A spokesperson for the club said: "It was brilliant to see a total of eight girls attending from Argyll - two from Mid Argyll, two from Campbeltown, and four from Oban.
"This was a great experience for the girls as they continue their rugby development."
