With the Clipper Race yachts in town, it might be hard to spot the other Clipper moored at Oban pontoons. That yacht, different to the rest, is SKIRR, Clipper’s adventure vessel.
For a full tour of the ship, see below:
SKIRR is a global traveller, just like her sister ships the Clipper 70s, but as a Clipper 68 she is much more suitable for expeditions.
SKIRR currently travels around the North Atlantic, from the UK, to Iceland and Greenland, with the crew deciding their objectives and activities upon arrival.
For two years, they have made Oban one of their stops, which was the caveat for the race coming to town.
Clipper Ventures’ managing director Chris Rushton called Oban "an ideal place for a stopover of the race".
You can hear more from him below.
Fully stocked with all the necessities, SKIRR is a completely different experience to the race, but that doesn’t mean it’s a cakewalk.
Prospective crew members are trained with all basic the nautical knowledge they need for the journey. Clipper provides this training at multiple different levels, increasing in difficultly.
12 guests can ride aboard for each expedition, with all of them having to be at least 18 years old.
SKIRR’s stop in Oban is already over, as they set sail for their second expedition leg to Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland yesterday.
This begins their long journey of chilling conditions, after spending the last few days in some perfectly timed Oban sunshine.
Skipper Emily Caruso said: "It’s life changing, mind boggling the first time you see the ice."
