More than 40 community-minded volunteers took part in a beach clean organised by Sheila Gilmore of VisitArran.
The clean up of Brodick beach and surrounding areas was made possible thanks to assistance from Helen Howe of Think About Plastic, Marine Conservation Society, and North Ayrshire Council which provided the pickers and the refuse bags.
The enthusiastic efforts from volunteers, including a number of eager young children, resulted in around 18 bags of marine and land litter being removed from the beach, Fisherman’s Walk and the car park at the small Co-op.
Among the more interesting items were a dogfish, a bank card, almost 20-year-old advertising, and a countless amount of shredded plastic, marine rope and twine, and other plastic litter which washed up on the shore.
Organiser Sheila Gilmore said: “Great turnout at Brodick beach clean, with over 40 participants.
“Especially great to see so many young people and kids turning up. Among the goodies we found a bank card, Lego, a tent, sauce boat, a poster from 2007, tyres and a ‘Welcome to Giants’ Causeway’ sign! Thanks to Marine Conservation Society for covering the event, and to everyone for their time and enthusiasm!”
All of the recovered litter was removed by North Ayrshire Council and the dogfish was given to Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) for educational purposes.
