Members of Dunaverty Golf Club faced tough playing conditions as they competed for the club’s December and January Medals in recent weeks.
Ten hardy souls braved near gale force winds as they played for the December Medal 2023 on Saturday January 20.
This competition was originally due to be played in December but was postponed due to high winds and heavy rain on that occasion, with the second attempt almost falling foul of the weather as well.
With a dry day, some very decent scores were returned, despite the howling blustery wind.
Competing in the last group of the morning, Neil Brodie and Mark Paterson motivated each other to produce some excellent golf.
In the end, Neil prevailed with a superb gross score of 71 to take the title, with a nett 65, pipping Mark by two shots.
Honorary member and “old-fla” Sandy Watson showed the younger players how to get the ball round in any conditions to finish third with a more than decent nett 69.
Result: 1 Neil Brodie 71-6=65, 2 Mark Paterson 74-7=67, 3 Sandy Watson 81-12=69. Lowest gross: Neil Brodie 71.
The blustery wind was again in full flow last Saturday (January 27), for the playing of the club’s January Medal competition.
A strong wind across the links greeted the players in the early morning, making golf difficult and only just playable.
Twenty gents decided to have a go and try to get the wee white ball round the 18 holes, a task that that was to prove extremely difficult, with four players unable to return a score, and Robert Irvine returning the best gross score of the day with a six-over-par 71.
The winner, however, was Alex Arkell with his best score in a number of rounds, returning a nett 64 to pip young Jake MacMillan by virtue of a better inward half.
A game of two halves saw Alex out in 42 strokes and back in 35 – wind assisted to a large extent – to take the prize.
“Thanks to greenkeepers Jonathan Barbour and Campbell MacBrayne for some excellent work over what has been a very extreme month weather-wise, and to Moyra Jane Paterson and team at The Putt Stop for warming everyone from the inside on return from the battle,” said a club spokesperson.
Result: 1 Alex Arkell 77-13=64 (bih), 2 Jake MacMillan 72-8=64, 3 Dougie Graham 83-18=65. Lowest gross: Robert Irvine 71.
