A woman who has spent the last 13 years raising her family in Campbeltown has officially become a UK citizen.
Sharmin Akter gained naturalisation after taking part in a British citizenship ceremony at the town’s Burnet Building last Friday.
Jim Martin, Depute Lieutenant of Argyll and Bute, attended the ceremony on behalf of His Majesty King Charles III, along with Councillor Tommy Macpherson on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council.
Speaking afterwards, Councillor Macpherson said: “It was a delight to meet Sharmin Akter and her family prior to taking her oath of loyalty to the United Kingdom.
“Having lived 13 years here in Kintyre, moving from Italy, it was an honour to play a small part in witnessing Sharmin take her pledge and to present her with a commemorative medal to mark this audacious occasion gaining British citizenship.
“I trust Campbeltown will provide Sharmin and her family the stability and opportunities they desire. I wish them all every success for the future.”
Councillor Macpherson enjoyed the opportunity to better get to know Sharmin, as well as her husband Syed and the couple’s children.
He said: “Syed and his daughters were known to me from brief exchanges but chatting with young Arafat, I heard about his fascination for cars, Shabiha and her love for participating and competing in sport – she won’t be happy with her team’s Auld Firm result on Sunday! – and Shaifa’s enjoyment for school and meeting up with friends.
“Sharmin has a talent for sweet pastry baking, both traditional Bangladeshi and Italian. Syed works full-time at the Bangladesh Tandoori restaurant.
“With a shared aspiration to set up independently in catering, we must continue to attract and encourage young families, like the Akters, with a welcoming attitude and support, helping to make Kintyre their permanent home.”
