There was a long queue at the Victory Hall in Benderloch at the weekend, waiting for the doors to open to the annual Plant Sale - fortunately the weather was kind!
The Plant Sale, on Saturday May 25, was a real community event, organised by the North Connel and District Horticultural Show Committee.
Gardeners from across Ardchattan and beyond had joined committee members in donating all kinds of wonderful plants to the sale.
There were oak trees and jasmine, lavender and strawberry plants (with fruit), tomatoes, perpetual, organic and heritage vegetables, honeysuckle, foxgloves and chilli peppers amongst many others. There were house plants too, ensuring there was something for everyone.
Refreshments with delicious homebaking were included in the entry charge, and the raffle was well supported.
Organisers said it was lovely to meet lots of ‘new’ folk at the sale, as well as long-time friends and supporters of the show.
The annual sale began in the 1990s as ‘coffee evenings with plants for sale’, when the North Connel and District Horticultural nearly ran out of funds.
It has evolved into an annual event in its own right, Ardchattan’s answer to Chelsea Flower Show, still raising funds to ensure the continuation of the show, this year on August 24.
Hopefully there will be money left over to support local horticultural schemes and the Victory Hall too.
