The Oban Open took place on Saturday March 22, and its success has put Oban firmly on the darts calendar.
The Claredon was buzzing as 91 entrants stepped up to the plate for the third edition of the Oban Open, with the staff keeping the atmosphere buzzing for a high octane evening.
And across the road at The View, the Ladies Open was also drawing the crowds.
In both the men’s and women’s tournaments, darts were flying right into the bullseye.
Players travelled from all over the country to compete, with the bar packed with patrons enjoying the games.
But all eyes were on the front runner for the crown, pro-player Willie Borland, who competed on the PDC World Masters this year, almost defeating defending champion Steven Bunting before being knocked out.
Borland won the day, but his appearance signals the huge strides which have been made in Oban’s darts scene.
Testament to this is the exciting announcement that Oban youth league organisers will be spending a day obtaining JDC (Junior Darts Corporation) Accreditation this week, giving the young talent in Oban the opportunity to receive the best top tier coaching.
Organiser and Champion of the Oban and District Darts League (ODDL), Adam Brook said: "Willie is a PDC pro and very down to earth, he was great with kids, giving them photos and signing their darts cases.
"I am truly grateful to everyone that helped and everyone that competed.
"Big thanks to the lovely sisters Michelle and Christina on the front desk, our master of ceremonies Kenny Carmichael, Brian Morris looking after our ladies event held at The View and thanks Diane Greenan for seeing it to the end.
"Massive thanks to The View for letting us hold it there, super job.
"Can’t forget our very own youth academy’s Jack Cassells who was there marking games today, he even got to mark the final and did a great job! He partnered up with our cracking MC Sean McHugh who did a fantastic job of calling the final."
A prize pool of £1050 was split amongst the winners, with earnings from the night’s raffle serving to fund the ODDL and youth league activities.
Next year the Oban Open will evolve into an even bigger event, the Oban Darts Festival, featuring the inclusion of a youth tournament, girls tournament and a doubles event also.
More details on dates and venues are still to be confirmed, but you can keep up to date on the ODDL Facebook page.
