Young Pupils learn from Dumbarton defeat

Campbeltown Pupils' under 13s (2009s) team played host to an excellent Dumbarton Utd 2009s team on Sunday at the Meadows.

 

The Kintyre youngsters put up a good first-half showing before eventually slipping to a 9-2 defeat.

 

The Pupils looked to build on their unbeaten start to their GDFYL cup section and, in front of a good crowd, matched their opponents for the first 20 minutes, albeit against some excellent possession play from their opposition.

 

The best chance during this period fell to the home team's striker Green, but his strong strike unfortunately cleared the crossbar.

 

Some good handling by Kerr in the Pupils goal kept the score tied, until a 10-minute period before half-time saw the away team strike clinically with four quick-fire goals without reply.

 

The Pupils came out for the second half in the hope that a quick goal or two would get them back into the game, but it was the strong-running Dumbarton team that scored with two further goals to make it 6-0 and put the game out of sight.

 

The young home team refused to give up, and Green darted through the defence to round the keeper and score following a good pass by Johnston to make the score 6-1.

 

Dumbarton continued to press, and scored three further goals before the Pupils scored a consolation with a good strike from Johnston after he cut in from the left to fire home.

 

The Pupils team has now won one, drawn one and lost one of their games to date, and will possibly learn the most from this defeat against a very good young team.

 

On Sunday, the Pupils will travel to Dumbarton, this time to play Dumbarton Riverside 2009s.
