It was Mid Argyll Rugby Club’s younger members who were once again to the fore this last weekend with the Micros and Minis taking part in a Dalriada, while the U16 Boys welcomed Wigtonshire to the Ropework Park.
Oban Lorne RFC, Islay RFC, Isle of Mull RFC, Campbeltown Junior Rugby Club joined Mid Argyll for a fun-filled day of rugby on Saturday.
Mid Argyll’s P4/5 section are wee in stature but were mighty in numbers for the home Dalriada -a couple of the regulars were missing but a strong five players made their debuts and contributed to the score lines.
The first couple of games had nerves high for the young Boars, however once they got into the swing of things everyone put in the effort to make some amazing tackles, impressive runs and score some great tries.
It was a good opportunity to identify things to be improved on, but also a great way for the newer bunch to get their foot in the door. Safe to say they’ve got the bug now and will join their team in the future for more Dalriada events.
P6/7s had a tough start to the day, facing a well-drilled Oban team. The resilient Boars discussed what went wrong for them in the first game and worked hard to improve small aspects of their game throughout the day, both as individuals and as a team.
The team adopted ‘set, set, press’ to tactfully put pressure on their opponents while encouraging themselves to move together as one line.
This quickly proved effective, boosting morale within the team as they created and used opportunities to steal the ball back and work towards the try line.
"Everyone played their best for each other, working hard throughout, even when they were exhausted. They should all be very proud of themselves after a great joint effort," said a spokesperson for the club.
"Although only five of them, the micros had a great day playing against each other, receiving participation medals, and watching the older kids in their games.
“Well done to all the players who took part and showed some impressive skills.”
Cumnock vs Ladies 1st XV
Nine Mid Argyll ladies travelled to Cumnock for the Aspiring League fixture on December 1.
Due to reduced numbers in both teams, players were moved about into different positions and Mid Argyll also helped Cumnock with a player or two. A slightly reduced pitch was played with three 20-minute phases and eight-a-side.
The game was well matched, with great team play from Mid Argyll again showing how much training really pays off.
It was a closely contested game between well-matched teams and in the end Cumnock came out slightly on top winning 45-41.
Try scorers on the day were Iona Campbell (4), Grace Drummond (1), Abby Hess (1) and Kirsty Waters-Gibson (1), with Iona also scoring three conversions.
Player of the match went to Harley Cogen for her determination, took on some epic contact and for her first time being lifted for the line outs, with a great core and managing to win the ball! Thanks to Cumnock for welcoming us and for a great afternoon of rugby!
U16 Boys vs Wigtownshire
After not managing any tries in their previous game, the Mid Argyll U16 boys found their mojo with three well-worked scores against the visiting Wigtownshire side on Sunday in the Inspiresport Boys’ U16West Club League.
Finding themselves 20 points adrift at half time, shear grit and determination saw them find their way back into the game in the second half.
The home side smartly adapted to the conditions, playing a more forward-oriented game, rumbling up the pitch while keeping the ball in hand.
Some quick recycling resulted in a score in the corner.
Wigtownshire added another try, before Mid Argyll replied with two more from the captain who was also named as man of the match.
Some hard-hitting defence kept Wigtownshire off the score sheet but, despite constant pressure, the home team were not able to add to their tally, finishing the game 19-29 to the visitors.
“A big thank you to Wigtownshire for making the eight-hour round trip, to Allan Gordon for refereeing and all the parents and guardians who went above and beyond to provide the after-match food,” said a spokesperson for the club.
Next Saturday, December 7, for the first time in two months, the Men’s XV hope to play Moffat RFC in the West Region League Division 3 at the Ropework Park; kick-off 2pm.
