Before we all get to unwrap our Christmas presents on December 25th, there is another stocking full of delights to open first. That is the amazing number of events all designed to get us into the Christmas Spirit and taking place in and around Oban in the town’s Oban Winter Festival from November 15th to 24th.
What makes them all the more special is that the vast majority are voluntary efforts – organised BY members of the community FOR the community. Oban Winter Festival goes from strength to strength and now has an amazing number of awards to its credit – and rightly so.
The 10-day event has been recognised by the Scottish Rural Awards, Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards, Scottish Thistle Awards and the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the equivalent of an MBE for voluntary groups.
You do not gather an armful of honours like that easily – since it began in 2011, the festival’s dedicated volunteers have worked hard and have grown this event into a wonderful example of how much can be achieved if we all work together.
At the start of the festival, on Friday November 15, the samba band Obanda and Coolio will lead the procession. This year, the fancy dress competition for adults and children is “Oceans and Seas”. This theme encourages a variety of installation ideas, including fish, mermaids, boats, lighthouses, and more.
Installations should be made from weatherproof, recycled, repurposed, or upcycled materials. When the procession arrives at Station Square, prizes will be awarded for costumes and there will be food, drink and entertainment.
