A Thrilling and Immersive Escape Room Experience at Inveraray Jail!
We were four friends having a long-awaited catch up and looking for something different to do this time around. We stayed in Inveraray for the weekend and after the obligatory lunch at The George (never disappoints), tea and cake at Brambles and a walk around the castle grounds, we were looking forward to a bit of challenging fun.
A heady mix of laughter and frustration!
We had the best time at the Debtors of 1850 Escape Room at Inveraray Jail!
From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported back in time to the 19th century, fully immersed in the eerie, authentic atmosphere of the old debtor’s prison.
The experience was so well thought out—every detail, from the dim lighting to the period-accurate props, made us feel like real prisoners trying to buy our freedom before the jail doors slammed shut for the night! The puzzles were incredibly clever, with just the right level of challenge to keep us thinking but not so hard that we felt stuck. We had to work together, solving riddles, cracking codes, and even crawling through hidden spaces (yes, crawling—one of us took one for the team!).

What made it even better was that everything was based on real historical stories from Inveraray Jail. It wasn’t just an escape room—it was a chance to step into the past and experience what prisoners actually went through. The fact that we had a private session for just the four of us made it even more exciting, and we were constantly on edge, racing against the clock to gather enough money to "buy our freedom."
The smugness (especially from Sam) at the end when we finally cracked the last puzzle was brilliant – we made it out just in time! The staff were brilliant too, explaining the historical background before we started and giving us just the right amount of hints when we needed them.
We’d highly recommend this to anyone looking for something different, whether you’re into history or just love a good challenge. It was such a laugh, and the sort of thing that anyone would love – whether you’re a bunch of friends, a couple or work colleagues – anyone over the age of 8 really!
