A big crowd gathered at the Inveraray Inn on February 12 for the monthly meeting of Inveraray and District Accordion and Fiddle Club.
In the absence of chairman Roddy MacDiarmid, committee member Jane MacKay, stepped in to compere the evening.
Supporting players were in abundance – with Angus J MacColl on Highland bagpipes, accompanied by Agnes Liddell on keyboard, getting the evening underway.
Other players were – Fyne Folk – with Jake MacKay, Sally Hall and Alex John MacLeod on fiddle, Margaret Campbell on keyboard and they were joined by John Kelly on guitar and Scott Sinclair on accordion; John Kelly on guitar and Janine Ashall on whistle and, for one set, were joined by Rosie Howie, playing for her first time, on mountain dulcimer; Janet Graham on accordion, accompanied by Jake, Agnes and Angus J; Joe ‘Succoth’ Campbell on ‘moothie’ accompanied by Jake and Agnes; local lass Katie MacLeod on clarinet; Scott Sinclair on accordion, accompanied by Jake, Agnes and Angus J.
All their varied selections were much enjoyed, as shown by an appreciative audience.
Guest artists were Robert Nairn on button accordion, his brother Alan on drums and Andrew MacDonald on piano accordion.
With a great west coast sound, they played many of the well-known and favourite pipe marches and Gaelic waltzes, as well as jigs, Highland Schottische tunes and reels.
After the raffle and tea, Angus J, accompanied by Agnes, gave a stirring selection of 2/4 pipe marches and a set of reels and they were followed by Scott, Jake, Agnes and Angus J with a couple of cracking sets, including a lovely rendition by Scott of The Shepherds of the Etive, for which he got rapturous applause.
It was then back to the guest artists for the remainder of the evening and this they did in style with Robert swapping the button box for the melodeon for a set.
All too soon it was time for the last set of jigs. The chairperson for the evening thanked all the players for a wonderful night of music and the evening ended with a ‘grand stramash’, much to the delight of the audience.
Next week, on Wednesday March 12 the club welcomes back Martainn Skene, originally from Lochaber, this time as guest artist along with his trio, to the Inveraray Inn at 7.30pm.
