To celebrate International Women’s Day, Arran High School Active Girls committee invited primary school children from across the island to participate in a ’come and try’ session at the high school.
The event attracted 53 young girls who were given the chance to try out various sports in three 15-minute activity rotations.
Among the activities on offer was girls’ football delivered by KA Leisure coaches, athletics-based triathlon training from Arran Junior Triathlon Club and Arran High School Sports Leaders, and a taekwondo taster session delivered by Arran Taekwondo Club.
The fun event, organised by Active Schools coordinator, Ross Dobson, in partnership with KA Leisure and Arran High School Sports Leaders, was aimed at celebrating and encouraging girls to enjoy sports by introducing them, or revisiting activities, that are available in the community.
Arran High School Active Girls representatives and S6 pupils, Annie McKelvie and Annie West, said: “We were so happy with the turnout of girls who came along to celebrate women and girls in sport. We hope we have encouraged some to join our local clubs and that they are able to find and embrace their passion for sport.”
Mr Dobson thanked all of the young participants for helping to make the event such an enjoyable success and thanked KA Leisure, Arran Junior Triathlon Club, Arran Taekwondo Club and all of the Arran High School Sports Leaders for their valuable contributions.
Following the enjoyable afternoon of physical activities with their peers and friends, all of the participants gathered for a group photograph and all received certificates of participation for their efforts.
