The Whitehouse Restaurant in Lochaline has been named as one of Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants by Good Food Guide 2024.
Owned by Chris and Agi Stanley-Fotos, the establishment is one of only 10 restaurants in Scotland to receive the honour. The couple’s commitment to quality, sustainability and culinary excellence was particularly highlighted.
The Whitehouse Restaurant overlooks the Sound of Mull, nestled in the Morven mountains.
The abundance of local ingredients is reflected in the menus that are created by chef Chris. His emphasis is on locally sourced, sustainable and seasonal ingredients, from game meats from Lochaline, fresh shellfish and cheese from the Isle of Mull, charcuterie and meats from Fort William, along with foraged herbs and flowers to create an ever-changing menu of truly local dishes.
Chris told Lochaber Times: “We are passionate about celebrating the rich flavours of the Morvern peninsula and providing our guests with an unforgettable dining experience.”
Agi, who runs front of house and creates a warm, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, sources local drinks to complement the menu, including her own seasonal cocktails using foraged flower syrups.
Agi told Lochaber Times: “We are incredibly honoured to be recognised by the Good Food Guide.
"This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team and the support of our loyal customers. We are passionate about celebrating the rich flavours of the Morvern peninsula and providing our guests with an unforgettable dining experience.”
Since moving to the area to take over The Whitehouse Restaurant in 2022, Chris and Agi have fully embraced local community life, from hosting Community Supper Clubs to running the burger stall at the Morvern Highland Games.
As well as sourcing ingredients for The Whitehouse kitchen locally, they have extended this to using local craftspeople to create bespoke leather bill holders, artwork for the restaurant and collaborate on events such as foraging workshops.
Agi explains: “It really is a special community and it’s great to be part of it, and being recognised is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, including our local producers.”
The Good Food Guide 2024 pays tribute to every aspect of The Whitehouse Restaurant, from the picturesque location to the exciting menu and warm atmosphere. This recognition is sure to attract visitors from far afield to enjoy a meal at what remains at heart a truly local restaurant.
