Like many coastal areas of Scotland, Kintyre has seen traditional fishing decline over the past decades, and with it, opportunities for people to find decent work. This has meant that young people move away, fewer new families move in and investment in the local community dwindles.
But for Sean Conachan and others like him, Mowi is breathing new life into formerly bustling communities with major investment, along with secure, meaningful and appealing career opportunities - and the positive social and economic ripples that go along with that.
Sean, Assistant Manager at North Kilbrannan, has been with Mowi for five years, having advanced through the company’s apprenticeship scheme. Sean began his career as a farm technician and progressed after completing an Aquaculture SCQF Level 5 / SVQ2 qualification with UHI Argyll.
Sean’s partner is a teacher in Lochgilphead, and as the couple have just welcomed a new baby, they are thankful that they can both enjoy important careers while raising their family here.
Without his job at Mowi the couple would probably have had to move away so they could both find work.
“Mowi really does invest a lot in skills and safety training,” Sean said. “They sent me on various tickets, and once you have the tickets, they are recognised by many different types of companies. I did my advanced powerboat, radar, crane and forklift courses, and Mowi funded it all.”
"You’re outdoors most of the time, so that’s a plus. Every day is different. You never know what you are going to do and that’s what keeps it exciting".
Mowi places a strong emphasis on training and development, ensuring that employees have the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the aquaculture industry. This commitment to staff development enhances the overall skill level and employability of the local workforce.
“You never have to worry about not being prepared for your job,” explained Sean. “Before, I worked at Starbucks, and I didn’t have any of these qualifications. You do learn quite a lot in the courses, and the lecturers at UHI Argyll are really helpful.”
Proud to be a part of the Carradale and wider Scottish community
Mowi has been a part of the Carradale community for the past 10 years, directly employing 12 people, whilst contributing to the wider local economy. The North Kilbrannan site, which received its first batch of fish a few weeks ago, will add 10 new jobs to the area, totalling £314K in salaries, plus £8M investment in a new facility and £2M investment in the harbour.

Each time Mowi, the world’s largest producer of Atlantic salmon, opens a site such as North Kilbrannan, it supports at least 64 jobs in the local supply chain, with more than 1,500 people employed across Scotland - team members, who, like Sean, have found meaningful and well paid jobs in communities that they love, doing work that they enjoy.
With its versatility, healthy nutritional profile and low carbon footprint, it’s no wonder that farm-raised salmon is the number one seafood choice for Brits. And salmon is the UK’s most valuable food export, with sales boosting the economy by more than a half billion pounds in 2023.
As 40 per cent of the country’s fresh salmon flows through Mowi’s processing plant in Fort William, that means Scotland’s west coast plays a significant part in the country’s economic future. So it’s important to the company that its employees are highly trained and satisfied in secure jobs that are helping to feed the world.
Team members like Sean are a vital part of this vision. “You’re outdoors most of the time, so that’s a plus,” Sean commented. “Every day is different. You never know what you are going to do and that’s what keeps it exciting.
Even just driving about on the boats is a lot of fun, and especially during the summer months, it’s fantastic!”
Breathing new life into an historic harbour
As part of its North Kilbrannan salmon farm development, Mowi is also playing a pivotal role in the proposal to rejuvenate Carradale’s iconic harbour facility. This will include the construction of a purposebuilt shore base, storage facilities and a new pontoon.
Improvements have already begun with Mowi’s clean up of the pier area, something applauded by locals, who have welcomed Sean and his team to their beautiful and historic port.
Mowi also supports local events and organisations, such as Carradale Harbour Day, which was held last weekend. Along with craft stalls, face painting and live music, the Mowi Salmon Wagon was on hand serving up delicious fish dishes to the hungry crowds, with proceeds going to the East Kintyre Community Council.
