Páramo is not just another outdoor clothing store in Fort William, far from it.
It is an award-winning brand with over 30 years of outdoor clothing expertise that combines intelligent and functional garment designs with high performance Nikwax® Analogy® fabric systems; ethically manufactures with the Miquelina Foundation in Bogotá, Colombia; and champions textile circularity via its inhouse repair service, its Recycling Scheme that provides a safe route for the disposal of unwanted gear, and its latest innovation that integrates chemically recycled yarns into new Páramo jackets.
Nikwax Analogy is Páramo’s superpower, being an extremely durable, breathable and membrane-free waterproof fabric that mimics the action of animal fur to protect you from rain and manage your sweat, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable on the Scottish hills and mountains. Páramo is the only outdoor clothing brand that doesn’t use membranes, taped seams or glues in its gear, making it easily repairable and ideally suited to recycling. This is of paramount importance given that the textile industry generates around 92,000,000 tonnes of waste annually.
"The long-lasting partnership between Miquelina and Páramo is an admirable example which shows that economic development and product quality can go hand in hand with human development and social justice." Rudi Dalvai, WFTO President
Páramo was founded in 1992, when Nick Brown visited Colombia and met Sister Esther Castaño Mejia, a nun running a sewing workshop called Creaciones Miquelina offering practical help to vulnerable women from the streets of Bogotá. Sister Esther needed a visionary partner willing to help the charity grow and so Páramo was officially born.
All garments manufactured at Miquelina carry the World Fair Trade Organization Fair Trade label and, to date, Páramo and Miquelina’s partnership has provided training and employment for more than 10,000 women.
Alongside its repair service and Recycling Scheme initiatives, Páramo is further championing recycling in the textile industry by integrating chemically recycled yarns into two new jackets - the Halkon® 360° for Men, and the Aspira 360° Unisex Smock, both of which are available to buy in the Fort William store.
These exciting new products, which use Pump Liner® made from recycled Páramo garments and textile waste, showcase the feasibility of a closed-loop supply chain and the potential for industry-wide adoption of chemical
recycling.
