This Bank Holiday, it’s essential to ensure your breakdown cover is up-to-date and appropriate for your journey, warns leading provider Start Rescue. Attempting to secure cover after a breakdown has occurred is not only ineffective but also considered fraudulent.
In June 2024, Start Rescue found that nearly 45% of incidents where they couldn’t assist were due to customers having no active breakdown policy. Additionally, 15% of cases involved drivers lacking Home Assist cover, while 11.5% exceeded their 10-mile local tow limit. Another 16% of breakdowns involved vehicles without a valid MoT or road tax, both of which are legal requirements.
"Many drivers choose a 10-mile local tow policy assuming they won’t travel far, but they may be caught off guard if they break down far from home this Bank Holiday and can’t find a local repair option,” says Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue. Exceeding the mileage limit on a local tow policy could result in additional charges for extra miles or multiple call-outs.
Start Rescue advises checking your breakdown cover and upgrading if necessary before you travel. Some providers require 24 to 72 hours for new cover or upgrades to become active, potentially leaving you vulnerable if a breakdown occurs during this period. Start Rescue’s waiting period is just 24 hours.
