With Christmas just weeks away, a study by The Motor Ombudsman offers insights into UK drivers’ plans and concerns for the festive season. The survey of 1,000 people revealed that 24% plan to start their journey two days before Christmas, while 13% expect to travel during peak traffic on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day itself.
Key concerns include long traffic delays (31%), adverse weather like rain and fog (30%), and breaking down in remote areas (23%). Additionally, 21% worry about issues such as punctures or poor visibility at night. Nearly half (49%) of respondents expressed fears of missing out on celebrations due to delays, with 38% most anxious about losing time with family and friends.
In terms of travel preferences, 56% of participants would use petrol cars, followed by diesel (20%), hybrids (14%), and electric vehicles (8%), reflecting the slower adoption of fully electric models.
When asked about car-related Christmas gifts, 23% would prefer vehicle accessories like dash cams and cleaning kits, followed by personalised number plates (17%) and tickets to automotive events (15%). Practicality and family time were top priorities, with 40% favouring gifts for year-round use and 20% valuing items that enhance family connections.
Bill Fennell, Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, highlighted the importance of preparation during this busy travel season. He encouraged drivers to check their vehicles for roadworthiness and safety before setting off. For repairs, he recommended visiting a repairer accredited to The Motor Ombudsman’s Service and Repair Code to ensure quality service and peace of mind.
The study underscores the challenges and expectations of holiday travel, emphasising planning and vehicle checks to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey for all.
