Local firm Arran Milk has contributed over £5488 to Arran Trust which provides grants to local organisations to deliver conservation, environmental and heritage projects that benefit the Arran community.
This generous contribution over the last five years includes the sale of over 19,500 litres of milk in 2024, which raised £981.95 for the Arran Trust.
Arran Milk donates five pence for every litre of Arran milk sold to the Arran Trust which it has supported for a number of years.
Beneficiaries of the Arran Trust have included The Screen Machine, Arran Dogs, Lamlash Community Hub, Arran Pioneer Project, Blackwaterfoot Playing Fields, Arran Community Toilets, Arran Theatre and Arts Trust, Kildonan Hall and many more.
Commenting on its contribution to community projects, Matthew Dobson of Arran Dairies said: “Arran Milk is a proud supporter of the Arran Trust and the amazing work they do in our community. Over the past five years, we’ve been fortunate to contribute to such meaningful initiatives, and we’re excited to continue helping support local projects.
“Our commitment to sustainability and community is at the heart of everything we do, and we thank all the retailers and customers that continue to support local farming on Arran by choosing Arran Milk.”
Arran Milk is a partnership between Arran Dairies, Bellevue Cheese Company, and the Murchie family at Tigheanfraoch Farm in Blackwaterfoot which is Arran’s last remaining dairy farm. The collaboration was formed to help retain dairy farming on Arran and it allows Arran Dairies and Bellevue Cheese Company access to milk produced on the island for their manufactured products, including Arran Ice Cream and Arran Blue, Brie, and Camembert cheeses.
Milk is collected from Tigheanfraoch Farm three times a week and it is made available to the community to purchase from 11 vending machines across the island, including Mara Fish Bar, Pirnmill Stores, the Corrie Hotel, the French Fox, Arran Butchers, Woodside Farm Shop, Bay Kitchen and Stores, Kilmory Hall, Blackwaterfoot Post Office, and Bellevue Farm.
The vending machine distribution model is key to Arran Milk’s mission. By using vending machines, consumers can refill their bottles, reduce single-use plastic, eliminate waste, and reduce food miles, and ensure that the carbon footprint of milk they purchase is kept low.
The company’s vending machines are currently all out on loan to businesses across the island. However, Arran Milk would be happy to arrange more vending machines if there is sufficient demand for the milk at the venue and if there is enough interest from local businesses, particularly cafes, shops, community hubs, and hotels.
Businesses interested in having an Arran Milk vending machine should send an email to info@arrandairiesltd.co.uk if they feel that a milk dispensing machine could be a viable proposition on their premises.
Arran Milk prides itself on being a healthier option compared to processed alternatives. It also encourages responsible recycling and advocates for reducing plastic waste by allowing people to fill their own bottles.
The milk itself has a loyal following among those who prefer the “old fashioned” creamier, non-homogenised taste - and the thin layer of cream at the top of the bottle.
During the 2020 pandemic, and at times when there has been a glut of milk, the community-minded company has also offered milk to Arran residents free of charge.
