Environmental campaigners are calling for urgent action to minimise the pollution impacts of Storm Eowyn on Tarbert’s beaches.
Tarbert Action on Coastal Litter is warning that plastics washed up during January’s gales will significantly add to the serious problem of marine microplastics if immediate action is not taken.
To begin to tackle the issue the group is organising a beach clean in Tarbert Harbour on Sunday March 9, beginning at 1.30pm at the Garval car park, with everyone invited to come along with waterproof clothing and gardening gloves.
Organiser Jenny Hunt told the Advertiser: “As in many places around Argyll Storm Eowyn has washed up a lot of plastic material high onto the beaches around Tarbert. The sooner it is removed the less likely it is break down into microplastics."
As well as cleaning up the local environment the group and its volunteers will be aiding the wider understanding of coastal litter and its impacts through recording what rubbish they find and adding the data to research being carried out at the University of Loughborough.
