A group of Norwegian aquaculture specialists has shared its expertise and visited ‘blue economy’ sites in Lochaber and Argyll during a week-long trade mission co-organised by West Highland Chamber of Commerce (WHCC) and Fort William firm Northern Light Consulting.
The Scandanavian group also participated in two special speaking events during the trip, first in Oban on February 11, before travelling to Fort William for a similar talk on February 12.
Speakers at the aquaculture event included Jørgen Vatn, International Growth Manager, Aquaculture at DNV, and Anne Anderson, Head of Sustainability & Development at Scottish Sea Farms.
WHCC CEO Frazer Coupland also addressed the audience to talk about opportunities and challenges in the current business landscape.
Amongst the trade mission were representatives of several major aquaculture companies working in Scotland and Norway, including Aquafarm Equipment AS, GreenFox Marine, Meox AS, JM Robotics, Promek, and VØATEC.
Mr Coupland said the trade mission, which was aided by Innovation Norway, had been highly productive.
“We’ve showcased the best of Scottish aquaculture and learned so much from our Norwegian colleagues. The connections made and the knowledge shared will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and innovation of this vital sector,” he said.
Following the successful Norwegian visit, WHCC has announced it is in the early stages of planning another blue economy event for the Autumn.
Provisionally titled ‘Blue Horizons: The Future of Scottish Aquaculture’, the event will unite industry leaders, local communities, and supply chain businesses to focus on innovation, community, and blue growth.
“We’re committed to championing the voice of the Highlands and ensuring that aquaculture continues to thrive as a key driver of our economy. This 2025 event will provide a platform to explore the challenges and opportunities facing the industry and to collaborate on solutions that ensure its long-term sustainability and success,” Mr Coupland added.
