Dull skies failed to put a dampener on Friday’s Tiree Agricultural Society Show.
Greek Gyros to doughnuts and Tiree potato chips, Ivy Macfadyen’s highland dancing, iZorbs, fun and games and a fundraising hair cut for Cancer Research were among the attractions and stalls.
Show secretary Kirsteen McKinnon wrote that in the home industries tent there were some exceptional entries and judges had their work cut out for them.
Jo Vale won the most outstanding item in the horticulture section for her vegetable arrangement of a cow’s head. Jo also won the trophy for the most points in the section.
The produce and handicraft section showed incredible talent with Gill Shand winning the trophy for best knitted article while Sue Bottomley won the most points in the handicraft section.
The most points in the produce section went to Josie Brown who also won the trophy for the most points in the Home Industries & Produce section, while the trophy for the most outstanding item in the produce section went to Olivia Bruce.
In the children’s section, siblings John and Amy MacInnes won the trophies for their age groups of Pre-school and 5-7 while Niamh MacLean and Ailish MacKechnie won it for the local 8 to 11 years and 12 to 16 years. Ailish also won the prize for the most outstanding item in the local children’s section with her fantastic welly boot of flowers.
Livestock classes had a brilliant turn out with every class showcasing an excellent quality of Livestock. The Champion of Champions from all the livestock sections was won by A & I MacInnes, Ruaig, with their homebred British Blue Heifer, Ruaig Tinkerbell, sired by Bluebell Connor out of Stonebyres Maya. A & I MacInnes also took the Corson Cup for the best cattle animal bred by exhibitor. John MacCallum selected C & H MacKinnon’s heifer, Westering Home as the overall crossbred champion.
The cattle had the largest number of entries for years.
The young stockpersons section had an excellent turnout. Lucy Kennedy, Heylipol, won the Kayla Mary MacDonald memorial cup for young stockpersons best crossbred ewe lamb as well as the Annie Cameron cup for the champion young stock person from the sheep and cattle sections. Callum MacKinnon won the Heylipol Farm cup for the best young handler in the sheep section.
In the sheep section, A & I MacInnes were awarded the overall purebred champion sheep with their Texel Gimmer, sired by a Collielaw tup, by the pure sheep judge Fulton Ronald, Fidden Farm, as well as being awarded reserve pure bred champion with their homebred Blue Texel Gimmer, Ruaig Highlife, sired by Eyecatcher. Their Texel Gimmer went on to win the overall supreme champion sheep at show and A & I MacInnes then won the trophy for the most points in the sheep section.
In the horse and pony classes, Emma Walker, Scarinish, won the Championship with her pony Maggie while the reserve champion went to Iona MacDonald on Missy. Duncan Connor won the Best Young Handler shield with Honey and the cup for the Best Veteran Horse or Pony at the show was also won by Duncan Connor with Honey.
Angus John MacKechnie swept the boards in the tractor classes winning the section with his Massey Ferguson 5712.
