Residents of a Mid Argyll village are one step closer to a brighter future that could see new job opportunities and a vital community hub being created.
Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has approved Cairnbaan Community Trust’s application to buy FLS’s former Knapdale office and workshop and turn them into a space for local groups, wellbeing activities and a pop-up café.
The trust now awaits a decision by Scottish Land Fund from whom they have requested the money needed to make the purchase.
Secretary of the trust Ann Adam said: “Community consultation has been extensive and we are pleased that our efforts have been rewarded by this decision.
“It has enabled the trust to progress its application for £90,000 from the Scottish Land Fund to buy the buildings, and a decision on this is expected early in the new year.”
The trust explained that this community ownership aims to create two new part-time jobs and bring a range of small-scale economic benefits to the area, supporting local businesses, entrepreneurs and community organisations as well as training young people.
It is hoped that the hub will also provide opportunities for education and creative activities and, in doing so, improve wellbeing and instil a greater sense of belonging within the community.
Mid Argyll councillor Provost Dougie Philand expressed his support for the community buy-out.
“I believe this is a real milestone for the group to achieve to be able to have a focus and hub in the centre of the village where all sorts of activities can be undertaken,” he said.
“I have been really impressed by the energy and vision of the group and do believe that Cairnbaan will be the benefit of such a transfer, allowing the area to grow a true and vibrant community spirit by getting many people involved locally in events. I see a hub being an essential part of the project.”
