But they were also surprised by an approach from a more distant source.

Former Inverlochy residents Joss and Benji Poole saw the announcement on the club’s social media pages, immediately recognising long-term friends Robert MacDonald and Ewan Easson on the list and making a bid to support them.

The Poole brothers both live and work in Tenerife, owning bars and a cafe, but never lost touch with home. They saw this as a chance to forge further links and bring a touch of Lochaber to their businesses by hanging photographs of local boxers on their wall.

However, their grandmother Mary Vickers beat them to sponsoring Ewan on behalf of the Lochy Bar in Caol, leaving Robert’s image to make its way to the wall of the cafe venue in the island sunshine.

Joss said: “It’s a great pleasure and honour for our establishment to support Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club, in particular, Robert MacDonald who is not only a longtime friend but a talented boxer.

“My brother Benji and I grew up in Inverlochy, met Ewan and Robert and both attended the club as youths.

“Although we have been in Tenerife for six years now building our business and enjoying a life in the sun, we are proud of our roots and, as a business, the cafe is delighted to support Lochaber and hopefully make a difference.”
