More than 100 people in 24 hours have signed an online petition urging Argyll and Bute Council and education planners to invest in a new campus on Mull, rather than ’waste public funds renovating a school that is not fit for purpose.’
Tomorrow night, parent council representatives from both Mull and Iona will gathering to agree a united statement to send to Argyll and Bute Council ahead of its meeting on Thursday, where councillors will decide on a ’bombshell’ option that could see plans for a new campus scrapped in favour of a ’mend and make do’ option involving Tobermory High School.
Mull and Iona’s four elected ward councillors have also been asked to attend the crunch Tuesday meeting.
Last week, we reported how people on the two islands, including both community councils, were ’astonished’ when an option not to build a new campus was spotted within council budget papers.
Argyll and Bute Council secured Scottish Government funding last year to put towards such a project and news of its success had been welcomed. The ’mend and make do’ option had not been flagged up to either of the community councils or leading community groups prior to the report being published.
Finance director for Argyll and Bute Council Kirsty Flanagan later told concerned community councils in an email there was "insufficient time" to let them know. Her comment was described as ’unforgiveable’ and ’unacceptable’ by protestors.
As Thursday’s meeting approaches, islanders are mobilising and getting together to make their voices heard - irrelevant of where a new campus would be located.
The change.org petition says signing up to it matters because: "Our children, the next generation, are growing up in an era marked by rapid advancements and opportunities. However, they lack access to state-of-the-art educational facilities that can prepare them for this fast-paced world."
"Tobermory High School is the only category C school building in the Argyll & Bute district, the authority itself has described it as being "unfit".
"Research proves that schools built after 2000 have shown a significant improvement in student performance compared to those operating in older buildings. The lack of adequate space and facilities also has a detrimental effect on the morale of staff and the school’s ability to attract and retain teaching talent, says the statement explaining why the petition is important.
"This is about more than just bricks and mortar; it’s about securing a promising future for our island over the next 50 years. It’s about providing our young people with equal opportunities and helping them reach their full potential.
"We urge local authorities and stakeholders involved in education planning on Mull to consider this plea seriously. Let us invest in a new campus on the Isle of Mull, rather than waste public funds renovating a school that is not fit for purpose."
The petition can be viewed here.
Separately, an on-line community poll that quickly attracted about 200 hits while it was open, also showed that support for a new campus was overwhelming.
A spokesperson for Argyll and Bute said last week: “Councils must balance their budget and so work within the limitations of funding and cost pressures.
"The harsh facts are that we are facing a £10 million+ gap in our budget to run services, and a £29 million or so gap in our budget for infrastructure such as buildings. All options that could deliver significant savings must therefore be considered. A new campus on Mull falls into that category, so has to be part of considerations when councillors meet to set the budget.”
