Oban High School held its annual prize-giving last week on September 3.
The atrium of the high school was full of proud families, there to see students collecting awards for their work in school over the past year.
The top table featuring Peter Bain, the outgoing and incoming school captains and guest speaker were piped into the room by talented piper Calan McGuigan.
The night was excellently hosted by the 2023-2024 Head Girl Suzannah Whittle and Head Boy Finlay Brown as they opened the night with an address to the audience about their time as school captains.
Head Teacher Peter Bain then gave the prize-giving address where he spoke about the importance of Oban High School’s vision and values which are painted on the walls of the school, and why it is important to allow students to get whatever qualifications they need for their futures.
Former Head Boy of Oban High School, Jamie MacGregor, was the guest speaker of the night. Jamie spoke fondly about his time at the school, and what he has done since then, as well as assuring students that “there is never a correct path to take” and he is now “In a job I absolutely love and I’m back in a place I absolutely love.”
Throughout the night there were musical pieces performed by Eirinn Higgins, who sang a beautiful rendition of ‘Waves’ by Dean Lewis. The Traditional School of Music wowed with their performance of Òran a’ Chlydesdale and Tyler Graham played an impressive solo on guitar.
Over the course of the evening around 180 awards were presented to students for either getting the highest marks in a subject, an endeavour award in a subject or another special award such as an award for school values or the rotary prize.
On top of this there is the annual DUX award presented to the student that performs the best academically, and this year it went to Thomas Harden.
Thomas addressed the audience and thanked the school for the award and he said he would “cherish it always”.
In his speech, Thomas also said the award: “Represents the culmination of years of hard work, determination and persistence.”
To finish off the night awards were given to the outgoing Senior Pupil Leadership Team (SPLT) and the announcement of the clan shield for the previous year, which was Clan Ossian for the first time since 2021.
Head Teacher Peter Bain said: “The prize-giving was absolutely fantastic and I’m so proud of all our young people for all the awards they won.
“And for those who didn’t win awards, I’m still proud of them, too, because it’s all about endeavour, resilience and keeping going and achieving the very best you can.
“Some win awards and some just have personal achievements, and they are equally as valuable. Well done to everybody in the school community!”
