A charity offering free trips for bereaved families is asking supporters to take on an epic challenge to raise funds for a new respite caravan.
Anam Cara Fasgadh’s first holiday caravan, Poppy’s Place, launched in 2022 and demand for the retreat in Tralee Bay, Benderloch, is so high that last year the charity launched an appeal for a second caravan.
Over £20,000 has been raised so far and the charity is now calling on adventure-seekers to help them with their mission of raising at least another £63,000 by August to buy the caravan and fund a year of annual costings.
In April, brave participants are invited to take on Anam Cara Fasgadh’s annual two-day Canoe and Kayak Challenge.
From Saturday April 5 to Sunday April 6, teams will take on the 36.4km expanse of Loch Lomond and then the hefty heights of Ben Lomond, bagging a Munro.
The tough, but rewarding, trip will take in beautiful views and you can register for the challenge here: register.enthuse.com/ps/event/LomondCanoeClimbforAnamCaraFasgadh2025
Susan Simpson and her husband Andrew Simpson set up the charity in 2018 with two friends. This year they will not only be taking on the canoeing and climbing challenge, but will be raising more money climbing Ben Nevis in May.
Anam Cara Fasgadh is also encouraging people to get involved in a Kiltwalk challenge in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee or Edinburgh.
The Glasgow Kiltwalk will be taking place on Saturday April 26 and Sunday April 27 and those keen to get involved can join the charity’s Director David Bunting as he takes on the 14-mile Big Stroll in Glasgow with his family.
Susan said: “Being part of a crowd of thousands of people walking the same road, but all for charity, is a brilliant experience.”
One of the charity’s motivations for purchasing a second caravan is that they will soon be forced to move Poppy’s Place to a new location after its lease runs out in December.
A potential site for the much-loved retreat has been found at a park in Jedburgh, in the Scottish Borders, but the charity is open to ideas for more local sites.
Susan said: “The park in Jedburgh would work well but if other people have ideas for more local sites, or even land they could offer we would 100% be interested in hearing from them.”
The charity plan for the second retreat, Cùram Cala, to be located at Tralee Bay and there are two potential caravans the charity could buy, one with a stunning view by the beach and another which could be moved onto the footprint of Poppy’s Place.
The new caravan will allow 50 more bereaved families to benefit from a free break and support from the charity each year.
Susan said: “What we have found is the grief caused by losing a baby, a child or young person is a lifelong journey, and some families that come to Poppy’s Place have never had time away for themselves to reflect.
“Some families have said they were on a destructive path until they had that time away, and peace to process.”
