The new year started with a bang on the Isle of Gigha, with the island’s rangers called out to rescue a stranded dolphin on January 4.
The Isle of Gigha Ranger Service was mobilised after a visitor to the island spotted a common dolphin stuck in one of the isle’s bays.
After doing their best to help the stricken animal, the concerned visitor informed the Isle of Gigha Camp and Motorhome Site of the issue, and its staff called the British Divers Marine Life Rescue and the Isle of Gigha Ranger Service.
Casey-Jo Zammit, who leads the ranger service, which is responsible for promoting and protecting the island’s natural, cultural, and historical heritage, sprang into action.
She said: “With guidance and support from our brilliant ‘onshore crew’ – excellent campsite manager and four fabulous local residents – and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, we managed to walk the dolphin out to deeper water.
“We think the dolphin became stuck after high tide as this bay has many sand banks that create a variety of depths across the bay, leaving the poor thing stuck.
“We were delighted that the dolphin swam away, albeit, a little slower than we would have liked. Yet, after a conversation with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, it seemed that the animal wasn’t malnourished and will hopefully be dashing and dancing about the waves now.
“Thank you so much to everyone who helped us, it truly was a team effort and hopefully has paid off!”
Casey-Jo highlighted the importance of getting in touch with the relevant authorities if you find yourself in a situation like this one.
She said: “It so important to report strandings to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue who can offer the correct and appropriate support, send marine mammal medics, and use the data to identify individuals and better understand the cause of strandings.”
Live strandings can be reported to the British Divers Marine Life Rescue 24 hours a day, by calling 01825 765546.
