The work of two Kintyre camera clubs was in the spotlight when amateur photographers gathered in Dunoon earlier this month for an annual Argyll-wide competition.
Five clubs – Carradale, Campbeltown, Mid Argyll (MACC), Oban, and Cowal – showcased their talents in a display of creativity and skill in the Frank Walton Inter-Club Competition, hosted by Cowal Camera Club.
In a nail-biting finish, MACC clinched victory, securing the trophy for only the second time in 25 years.
The competition was intense, with final scores reflecting a close race. MACC led with 198 points (out of 240), followed by Oban at 195, Cowal at 194, Carradale at 178, and Campbeltown at 157.
Judge Guy Philips provided valuable feedback on all 60 images, ensuring participants gained insights to improve their craft.
Campbeltown Camera Club meets monthly, every second Thursday, at Campbeltown Picture House at around 7.30pm.
“We all joined the club to improve our photography and meet with like-minded people,” said group member Lorraine Boag.
The club aims to organise its own annual competition and usually enters the Frank Walton Inter-Club Competition too, but did not take part last year, and decided at the last minute to join in this year.
“We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” added Lorraine. “We’re just a small group who enjoy ‘snapping’. Our meetings are very informal; we chat and make plans for our outings – both usually involve coffee/tea and cake!
“We like to get out and about when weather permits, to places like the harbour, Southend, Torrisdale and A’Chleit, for example.
“Some of us use mobile phones, some bridge or DSLR cameras, or even just go for the walk/company.”
Carradale Camera Club meets every fortnight between October and June. The meetings are a mixture of reviewing members’ images, learning about photographic techniques, practical activities and talks.
“We take part in one external competition each year, and have an internal competition in the summer,” said Russ Baum of the group. “The highlight of the year is the August exhibition in Carradale Village Hall.
“In the Frank Walton competition, club members punch above their weight and always receive positive and rich feedback from the judge.”
